Blackboard's Dirty Laundry Comes Out in Patent Trial

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Blackboard's Dirty Laundry Comes Out in Patent Trial
Kudos to Michael Feldstein, who has been on top of the Blackboard patent case since the beginning, for offering continual and insightful reportage. Today we get news of some of the seamier side of the LMS wars: "Blackboard apparently sponsored a spy to go to the D2L user conference and report back on the events and even had an employee pose as a university employee (with a fake email address) to gain competitive information" and "while the public story around the patent is that they are protecting their intellectual property, the 'real' purpose was to 'contain and control' D2L. So the goal is to distract the #2 vendor in the LMS space with a costly lawsuit." Sad. More...

Clear and to the Point

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Clear and to the Point
Summary of a new book by Stephen Kosslyn, Chair of the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, Clear and to the point, which describes "8 psychological principles for compelling PowerPoint presentations." Readers may not know (but should) that Kosslyn's expertise is in the area of mental imagery - I read a lot of Kosslyn (and (totally misplaced) criticisms of him from Fodor and Pylyshyn) while I was studying in grad school. PowerPoint is all about imagery, so I think there's some good overlap here. More...

Elearning Samples

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Elearning Samples
A nice (and long) list of examples of e-learning (and it's instructive to look at some of the things here, such as RSS in Plain English, Homestand (about minor league baseball), or Airport Security, and compare them to what we thought 'learning objects' should be - no metadata, no 'wrappers' - no pedagogical properties per se - but great learning. Creating a C|Net for Education

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Creating a C|Net for Education
News of 1105 Media's acquisition of Education Plaza, which promises to be the 'CNet of Educational Technology' (I quite like CNet and have linked to them a lot over the years) but more to the point is a commentary on our field: "Our market is just completely broken. It is vendor driven and vendor controlled (and this, unfortunately even extends to Web 2.0, where it is all about repurposing whatever falls from the sky). I've never seen such unilaterally disempowered customers. This is, to a certain extent, due to legal concerns about handling RFP's and bidding, but it really goes beyond that. People literally seem afraid that Microsoft will retailiate against them if they talk to loudly about alternatives". More...

A Kaleidoscope of Futures: Reflections On the Reality of Virtual Learning

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. A Kaleidoscope of Futures: Reflections On the Reality of Virtual Learning

I am behind in my reading, a combination of poor bandwidth and conference conditions, so I may add an extra newsletter in the future. In the meantime, this is the link to my presentation Wednesday (video and slides), where I look at the relation between reality and online learning. You will also get to see me struggle with the backchannel, as the discussion taking place behind me sometimes completely flummoxed me. Fun fun fun. The image above is what Orange County looks like today - stifled in smoke. Stephen Downes, Stephen's Web October 26, 2007 [Link] [Tags: , , , , ]. More...

Old News Item On This New Thing Called Internet

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Old News Item On This New Thing Called Internet
George Siemens sent me this link to an old CBC video about this brand new thing called 'the Internet', now being used by 15 million people. (As an aside, I'm finding that I've come to really dislike the comments that get posted on YouTube. Maybe I'm becoming old and intolerant. More...

Well, If They'Re Already Using It ...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Well, If They'Re Already Using It ...
This article begins by posing the question fo whether universities should attempt to block students' use of Web 2.0 services or whether it should embrace them. It them answers its own question by looking in more detail at the way Northwestern University outsources its student email account handling to Google Mail. It's an interesting arrangement, and the marketing (with a captive audience) is obviously very effective. We are given assurances about privacy and security and informed that students just forward their email anyways. More...

Celebrating Failure

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Celebrating Failure
I always want things to go perfectly. They don't, always. Trying new things creates the possibility of failure. "These same students, who are hiding and embarrassed by their "failure" with certain concepts (again, I see this mostly in Math), have no problem when they come in and fail at some computer game in the lab, or when they play XBox, Nintendo, Playstation at home." I need to embrace the idea that life is like a video game. More...

E-Portfolios – the DNA of the Personal Learning Environment?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. E-Portfolios – the DNA of the Personal Learning Environment?
A core value of the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is in facilitating reflection. "Facilitating reflection is not simple within a largely 'input based' curriculum where the main goal is to pass a series of prescribed examinations. The danger is that reflection is simply seen as irrelevant to the qualification driven motivation of many students within their school based learning (as opposed to outside school)." I've tried to describe 'curriculum' (if you will) as a process of engagement. There remain people who think this can be planned, as though it were a play. More...

Anaheim 2007

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Anaheim 2007

There was no newsletter yesterday, so you didn't miss it. Today's comes to you from the AECT conference here in Anaheim, where the winds have abated but the smoke still lingers. The photo above was the scene from my hotel room window at 7:30 a.m. as the Sun rose behind the still burning Santiago fire near Santa Ana - you can see the smoke plumes from it.
