Nationmaster

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Nationmaster, October 19, 2006
This is a really nice resource. Pick a category, pick a stat, and compare the nations of the world. Who grows the most barley? Russia, followed by Ukraine and Canada (we need it for the beer). Or if you don't know what to look for, just serach, and find boths stats and commentary. Or just browse by country. More...

LOCKSS

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: LOCKSS, October 19, 2006
This is a nice program and I'm glad people are doing this. "A library uses the LOCKSS software to turn a low-cost PC into a digital preservation appliance (a LOCKSS Box) that performs four functions: it collects newly published content from the target e-journals using a web crawler similar to those used by search engines; it continually compares the content it has collected with the same content collected by other LOCKSS Boxes, and repairs any differences; it acts as a web proxy or cache, providing browsers in the library's community with access to the publisher's content or the preserved content as appropriate. The EU is After Us Again

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Teemu Arina[Edit][Delete]: The EU is After Us Again, FLOSSE Posse [Edit][Delete] October 19, 2006
Concerns are being expressed about the potential impact of a proposed directive to extend Europe's broadcast regulations to the internet. "This is not only a question of culture and freedom but also a question of education. More...

The Rhetoric of Change

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The Rhetoric of Change, heyjude [Edit][Delete] October 19, 2006
Judy O'Connell is summarizing the talks from the Global Summit, with a good outlin of SeymourPapert talk. She also looks at George Siemens's talk at Leigh Blackall's. Of the latter she says, "though the politics of life will often mean that opinions expressed this way will be be counter-productive." Well, I look at Seymour Papert, and I look at myself, and I look at Leigh Blackall, and it seems to me we have three generations of people saying the same thing, and still the news comes, as O'Connell notes, a "surprise" to those attending. Decline of the PDA?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephanie Reiger[Edit][Delete]: Decline of the PDA?, Keitai [Edit][Delete] October 18, 2006
The market in handhelds is changing and the author wonders whether the days of the PDA are nearly over, to be replaced by something like a smarter mobile phone. The big difference between the two, it seems to me, is that the PDA is a computer while the mobile phone is not. What this difference amounts to is this: you can hack your PA, but not your phone (like all absolutes, this isn't completely true, but it is mostly true). More...

Education.au Seminars

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Education.au Seminars, Education.au Seminars [Edit][Delete] October 18, 2006
This blog has been around since July but I'm just noticing it now (can you tell I've been busy recently?). The blog mostly links to audio and other media from presentations sponsored by education.au, including those from the recent Global Summit. Just posted, for example, is a talk by Doug Brown, from the Department of Education and Skills in the U.K. Or listen to Leigh Blackall on why teaching is dead and the rise of connected learning. perX

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: perX, October 18, 2006
This is a nice example of federated search. Note that when you input the search term it accesses each repository separately, then provides a link to the search results, if any. Advantages: the search happens in real time. Disadvantage: it's slow, and puts an excessive load on the repositories in the federation. Also, search results are unordered, and there's no value-added (such as third party tagging). Which leads me to really question the value of the federated approach. More...

And Then It Hit Me...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Anonymous[Edit][Delete]: And Then It Hit Me..., Webhead Link [Edit][Delete] October 18, 2006
"A mantra that Stephen Downes chants over and over in presentation after presentation: the power of the Internet is that it makes possible an aggregation of knowledge distributed over P2P networks whereas in a CS system knowledge resides in and is the property and responsibility of a single omnipotent yet not omniscent entity." Yes. More...

Schools Trying to Prevent Harassment in Cyberspace

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephanie Dunnewind[Edit][Delete]: Schools Trying to Prevent Harassment in Cyberspace, Seattle Times [Edit][Delete] October 17, 2006
Funny. "Mr. Scarpelli does not have a MySpace page, nor will he ever have a MySpace account." This article looks at the issue of fake teacher MySpace accounts in passing as it looks at the impact of the phenomenon on schools in general. "MySpace registered its 100 millionth user in August." Instead of just ignoring MySpace (or blocking it and pretending it doesn't exist) schools are beginning to address real issues - like spoofing and harassing - through education and, in some few cases, litigation. An Interoperable Fabric for Scholarly Value Chains

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Herbert van de Sompel[Edit][Delete]: An Interoperable Fabric for Scholarly Value Chains, D-Lib Magazine [Edit][Delete] October 17, 2006
More on Object Reuse and Exchange (ORE). This article outlines some of the thinking behind ORE and offers a description of some of the major functions (or elements) of the new initiative. Again , I don't see anything particularly new here, except that is is creeping federation entering the world of OAI. And so I ask (as I did throughout the eduSource project) do we need a system of learning and research data exchange that is inaccessible to most people? Yes yes, I know, this sort of thing isn't explicit in the proposal. But why the use of OpenURL (which sends a different resource to people depending on the 'context' of the request). More...
