Entre 2010 et 2015, 22 % des personnes en emploi ont changé de métier. Ces changements sont plus fréquents parmi les jeunes : ils concernent un tiers des 20-29 ans. Chez les salariés, les personnes en contrat à durée limitée (intérim, [CDD→https://travail-emploi.gouv.fr/droit-du-travail/les-contrats-de-travail/article/le-contrat-a-duree-determinee-cdd]) changent plus souvent de métier que celles en contrat à durée indéterminée.
Les mobilités sont plus fréquentes lorsque le métier exercé initialement requiert des compétences transférables dans d’autres domaines. C’est le cas dans l’électricité-électronique et l’artisanat, où plus de trois personnes sur dix changent non seulement de métier mais aussi de domaine professionnel à cinq ans d’intervalle.
À l’opposé, dans les domaines professionnels où l’accès est réglementé ou se fait par concours, la mobilité est plus limitée. C’est le cas de l’éducation, de la formation (5 % de changements de métier) et de la santé, l’action sociale, culturelle et sportive (9 %).
Enfin, certains domaines attirent particulièrement, notamment celui des ingénieurs et cadres de l’industrie : la part de ceux qui ont quitté ce domaine depuis 2010 (26 %) est nettement inférieure à la part de ceux qui l’ont rejoint en 2015 (39 %).
