Copyright Excesses Worry Teachers, Scholars

Copyright Excesses Worry Teachers, Scholars
Coverage of the recent Knowledge Held Hostage? Scholarly Versus Corporate Rights in the Digital World at the Annenberg School for Communication (it's too bad the conference didn't make presentations available online). According to the article, "Educators and legal experts contend new technologies and lawsuits are creating uncertainty about what is exempt under the law." Even where fair use rights exist, the threat of litigation has schools consulting their lawyers first, weighing the educational benefit against the cost of defending their rights. More...

Music Downloads: Pirates—or Customers?

Music Downloads: Pirates—or Customers?
Interview with Felix Oberholzer-Gee, who with co-author Koleman Strumpf "floored the disbelieving music industry with their findings that illegal music downloads don’t hurt CD sales." Some good stuff here, but nothing new for people who have already read the report. More...

Estudios Pedagógicos
Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), a major source of Open Access STM literature from Latin America, has launched five new publications, including this journal, Estudios Pedagógicos, which is a Spanish language "publication of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the Austral University of Chile. It welcomes collaborations specializing in the field of education and that constitute a contribution to pedagogical knowledge." Q&A with Saul Carliner

Q&A with Saul Carliner
I like Carliner's frank assessment of the current state of e-learning and his sober perspective on the predictions made by various e-learning pundits. In particular worth noting are the low scores given to e-learning on student assessments and the lack of knowledge of decision makers in the field. Carliner also expresses caution regarding the roles games, simulations and blogs will play in e-learning. More...

Swap Blockers Graduate to High Schools

Swap Blockers Graduate to High Schools
Good overview full of links to primary sources (the way online news coverage should be, unlike the link deserts found on most news web sites) describing the trend of using P2P network blockers in high schools. Well, the micro-trend, anyways, since only a few schools are named. More...

Information and Communications Technologies in Schools Survey

Information and Communications Technologies in Schools Survey
More than 97 percent of Canadian schools have internet access, with the schools averaging one computer for every five students, according to this new study by Industry Canada. The bulk of these computers use "always-on" internet connections (as compared to dial-up, but a nice euphemism that masks whether or not the connections are high-speed). More...
