Copyright Clearance Center Releases New Report on Copyright in the Digital Workspace

Copyright Clearance Center Releases New Report on Copyright in the Digital Workspace
Interesting report surveying internet use in the corporate space. According to the results, the internet is widely use for research (and is often the sole source of research). More surprisingly, file sharing is widespread in the corproate environment. "Employees seek out information that is relevant to business objectives. Once they find it, they frequently share it with others for a wide range of purposes often without realizing that their actions may violate copyright law." It's a habit as old as work - once you find something interesting, you share it with your friends and colleagues. More...

Just Another Wacky Day in December

Just Another Wacky Day in December
So anyhow, today started with me missing my 6:30 a.m. flight to Ottawa - so if you're expecting me, I'll be in the city tomorrow. What else? My discussion board continues to emit sparodic, unreplicable errors in which the entire thread is not formed, But happily, it works sometimes - long enough, at least, to get this cogent response from Scott Wilson on Personal Learning Environments and a response from Fen Labalme on i-Names. What else. More...

Component Frameworks

Component Frameworks
Scott Leslie sent me notice of this very interesting presentation. The key is on the third slide (edited for syntax): "[The] Web Server paradigm fails lifelong learners – How? [The]Stateless browser leaves no trace behind. To manage their learning they need their own records. Lifelong learners attend multiple institutions over time, even at the same time. [They] have to learn a new environment at each. Their record and portfolio is scattered. They need a continuous connection for learning, but, if off-campus, this may be slow, unreliable, expensive. As eLearning becomes more complex, VLEs won’t scale. PLEs [Personal Learning Environments] allow the learner’s system to share the load." The solution proposed is complex, Java-based and Web-Services based. I think it needs to be simple, language neutral, and use appropiate protocols for appropriate tasks. More...

Quality and Standards

Quality and Standards
"A brief outline of my position on quality and standards, submitted because it exists..." What follows is the shortest version ever of my 'Resource Profiles' paper, with some comments on quality recommendation thrown in. The item has received some comments also worth a look (and to which I will probably reply shortly). By Stephen Downes, Learning Circuits Blog, December 19, 2004 [Refer][Research][Reflect]. More...

2004 In The Rear View Mirror

2004 In The Rear View Mirror
Something piqued me last year and I came out with 2004: The Turning Point, a foolhardy foray into short-term prediction. I say a lot of things, and some of them might not be true. And people rely on my projections, perhaps not so much as they rely on astrologers, but enough all the same. So how did I do? Let's look at the article. Blogging and RSS in Education

Blogging and RSS in Education
Slides and the audio from my talk at Acadia here in Wolfville (7 megabytes). Similar to my talk of yesterday, but I spent less time on the basics and more time talking about wikis, RSS aggregation and Edu_RSS. There are some photos of Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Library and Archives Canada

Library and Archives Canada
I won't link to the article in a certain Canadian newspaper because of its registration requirements, but via the blogosphere comes a good point: while people are gushing with praise over Google's deal to scan and digitize archival materials from some major universities, some other organizations have been doing this for some time - in particular, "Library and Archives Canada, which combines the former National Library of Canada and National Archives of Canada, has been especially active, scanning millions of pages of documents a year.
