The Eurydice Network from the European Commission has published this week its new report on Modernisation of Higher Education in Europe: Academic Staff - 2017 which explores the current realities for academic staff within this changing higher education landscape. The report focuses on the qualification requirements for academic staff, the recruitment process, employment and working conditions in academia, the impact of external quality assurance, and top level strategies for internationalisation. EUA and leading research groups express concern about EU Copyright Reform

The letter is addressed mainly to the JURI Committee but also to members of the European Parliament and national governments. This is a wide stakeholder response to the recent opinions expressed by several European Parliament Committees on the Commission’s Proposal, in particular the opinion issued by the ITRE Committee in July. As explained in the joint letter EUA is concerned that “the proposals on the Copyright Directive will limit academic freedom by creating burdensome and harmful restrictions on access to scientific research and data, as well as on the fundamental rights of freedom of information, directly contradicting the EU’s own ambitions in the field of Open Access and Open Science.” More...

With the start of the new academic year, EUA calls on universities to contribute to its campaign for an ambitious framework research programme to cover the period 2021-27, allowing to strengthen EUA’s position as a major stakeholder in these discussions. EUA remains fully committed to achieve optimal conditions for universities to participate in the next EU Framework Programme for Research & Innovation (FP9).
