Special issue of IRE explores how youths and adults learn through experiences gained in informal settings

A special issue of the International Review of Education – Journal of Lifelong Learning (IRE) explores how youths and adults learn through experiences gained in informal educational settings.
Experiential learning is a process through which a learner constructs knowledge, skills, and value from direct experiences. It transforms the learning experience from passive to active, and is recognized by modern educationists as a crucial aspect of learning. The editors argue that educators must not only be aware of the general principle of how experience shapes the way we learn, but also recognize that experience leads to growth and can foster a strong learning identity. Featuring the Caribbean

Lifelong learning should be made ‘a necessity and not an option’ – that was the verdict of participants at the CONFINTEA VI Sub-Regional Follow-up Meeting for the Caribbean. In response, and to support Caribbean states’ efforts to promote youth and adult learning policies and practices, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is presenting a series of ‘Caribbean Features’. These texts, which will draw on data from the meeting presentations, as well as the national reports of the third Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE III), complemented by UIL research, will review and analyse adult learning and education in the Caribbean. The aim is to highlight progress and challenges, while offering inspiration and examples of best practice.

Turnbull Government's Higher Education Reform Package 1 May 2017

By Paul Kniest. The Minister for Education and Training, Senator Simon Birmingham, released the government’s new Higher Education Reform Package on Monday 1 May 2017.  This much anticipated announcement has arrived after two years of uncertainty following the calamitous attempts by Christopher Pyne to deregulate the higher education sector.  In announcing the government’s new reform package, the Minister also said that the government was abandoning all of its previous higher education policies, including:

  • the 20% cut to funding per student,
  • deregulation of university fees,
  • the expansion of the demand driven system and public subsidies to non-university (including for-profit) providers, and
  • the 10% cut to research training scheme funding and the imposition of tuition fees on domestic higher degree research students.

While these are important back downs, it must be understood the new package of policies still involves a substantial cut to the level of public investment in higher education. More...
