This masterclass provides an opportunity to learn about the workings of government; the development of policy and decisions that affect higher education; and how senior university leaders can both interact with government and influence policy and decision-making.

Features
Learning from those in the field
Participants will interact with a range of senior government officials and university leaders and representatives during the program to gain first hand understanding of the processes of government and its most senior decision-makers.

Exposure to key governmental departments
Participants will be exposed to several departments whose policy affect universities, including Treasury and Finance, Innovation and Industry and Health. Among other things, representatives will provide participants with insights on the complexities of the budget process.

Site visit to the Department of Education
Participants will have the opportunity to visit the Department of Education to meet with key figures and discuss current policy issues directly.

Chatham House Rule

This subject provides an overview of policy making and funding methods for science, technology and innovation, particularly for those overseeing the funding and governance of these fields. Topics covered include:

• The theory behind and practice of science, technology and innovation policy
• State-of-the-art tools and methods for funding capacity building
• Trends in science, technology and innovation policy
• Preparing policy briefs based on prior analyses
• Matching policy objectives to funding instruments.

Learning outcomes

On completion, participants should be able to:

• Investigate policy problems and generate options to resolve them
• Assess the risks and benefits of different solutions to policy problems
• Align or design and then implement accepted policies within their own institutions
• Communicate their policy to people who work in different cultures and contexts.

The conceptual nature of STEM disciplines means that students often start a subject with incorrect scientific assumptions. Misconceptions can be difficult to overcome, particularly in large classes where correcting them through personalised feedback is difficult or impossible. The presenters will discuss their development of a suite of active learning and student-centred teaching approaches that can be applied in large class settings to confront students’ misconceptions and bring about conceptual change. They will do so in the context of a large, second year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology subject, with the aim of eventually broadening the approach to include psychology and computer sciences. Preliminary data on successful methods to break strongly-held student misconceptions in large classes will also be outlined. More...

L’observatoire prospectif des métiers et des qualifications de la branche, en partenariat avec l'ADAPT, se mobilise pour l'emploi des personnes atteintes d'un handicap. A travers son rôle fédérateur et représentatif, l'observatoire mobilise, accompagne et sensibilise les acteurs de la branche professionnelle sur la thématique du handicap.
Cette volonté se traduit concrètement par la mise à disposition d’un éventail de dispositifs mobilisables pour les acteurs pour agir en faveur de l’emploi des personnes handicapées. Cette campagne de mobilisation se déclinera à travers différentes actions opérationnelles et événementielles en cette fin d’année civile et sur toute l’année 2016. Voir l'article...

Le passeport orientation et formation permet de recenser les formations suivies et les qualifications acquises dans le cadre de la formation initiale ou continue. Il permet ainsi d’enregistrer les différentes étapes de la vie professionnelle et des compétences acquises, illustrant le parcours professionnel du salarié.
Chaque salarié pourra à son initiative, établir son passeport orientation et formation qui reste sa propriété et dont il garde la responsabilité d'utilisation. Ainsi, le passeport orientation et information permettra de recenser :

• les diplômes et les titres obtenus au cours du cursus de formation initiale,
• le ou les emplois tenus dans une même entreprise dans le cadre d’un contrat de travail et les connaissances, les compétences et les aptitudes professionnelles mises en œuvre dans le cadre de ces emplois.
• les expériences professionnelles acquises lors des périodes de stage ou de formation en entreprise,
• les certifications à finalité professionnelle délivrées sous forme de diplôme, de titre ou de certificat de qualification, obtenus dans le cadre de la formation continue ou de la  validation des acquis de l'expérience,
• la nature et la durée des actions de formation suivies au titre de la formation professionnelle continue,
• les habilitations de personnes,
• les activités tutorales exercées.
