Old School rules! Wisdom of massive open online courses now in doubt

By Meghan Drake. They have been touted as the biggest revolution in higher education since Plato opened his academy, but a growing number of educators are saying that MOOCs — “massive open online courses” offering free instruction through cyberspace — may not be ready for a cap and gown. Academic administrators at top colleges are increasingly questioning the rigor of MOOC courses, the rates of success for students and the financial viability of teaming up with private companies using aggressive marketing tactics. Competency-based programs: ‘Low cost, high quality’

The University of Wisconsin’s all-you-can-learn, competency-based flex program—designed for adult students—started in January. Students can pay $2,250 for a three-month, all-you-can-learn subscription, or just $900 to work on a single set of competencies, says Vice Chancellor Aaron Brower, the interim provost of the UW Extension School. Central Florida is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, so it makes sense that hospitality enterprises can be counted on to provide a financial boost—even to higher education institutions. How To Teach Creative Writing To Undergrads While Being A Feminist Harpy

The Awl - Be Less StupidBy . I teach introductory creative writing at the University of Michigan, and I’d just finished this agonizingly detailed response letter to the 20th student story I’d graded in the last three weeks, and then I was printing out all this stuff at once and catching snippets of these sentences in my feedback that were just totally insane, about ghost cocks and specific apocalypse plausibility and whether or not so-and-so would have randomized her email before putting a thing on Casual Encounters, and all of a sudden I was just like, what am I doing? WHAT AM I DOING RIGHT NOW? More...

Disaggregating Higher Education

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/the_world_view_blog_header.jpgBy Liz Reisberg. Many universities seem to be moving in the direction of off-loading services. Partnerships seem to be the name of the game with many non-profit institutions taking on for-profit partners. Contracting private companies to take over campus services such as dining halls and bookstores is not a new phenomenon and one that has produced important budget efficiencies for many universities. The more recent trend is to student services. Many of these partnerships are geared towards internationalizing the campus. Read more...

Loans

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/provost.jpg?itok=k-3W3N__By Herman Berliner. I was interviewed by our University radio station about the shape of the US economy.  Though I answered at length, my conclusion was and is that the economy is strengthening and that the signs of recovery are more and more visible. At the end of the interview, I was asked about students’ loans and how I felt about many students needing to go into debt to finance their higher education. Read more...

The Parkinson Poems

By Oronte. We know love is complex. It’s chaotic, multifaceted, complicated; it’s made up of both shadow and light, beauty and ugliness.  The best contemporary love poetry rejects the notion that love is stable and fixed—an emotion that flows from subject (usually male) to idolized object (usually female) —and instead, attempts to illustrate its intricacies, contradictions and complexities. Online and Face-to-Face Education

By Carole Browne and Jacquelyn Fetrow. Many faculty fear that online teaching is incompatible with the liberal arts educational model, a model that focuses on small class sizes and the availability of faculty to interact with students outside of the classroom—a model which, when done well, has been demonstrated to produce outcomes of critical and creative thinking and analytical reasoning. Man Up

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I read to my kids every night at bedtime. Right now, we’re reading Matilda by the great Roald Dahl (probably my favorite children’s author). It exaggerates a certain…old-school style of teaching that involves shame, humiliation, and physical violence. The Trunchbull, the larger-than-life and exceedingly violent headmistress, hold all children in contempt, unable to believe that many of them can or should learn. The usual reaction to The Trunchbull is for everyone to accept it as the way things work, and to simply get through it. Read more...
