Learning cities in China are taking innovative steps to promote sustainable development through learning and education. For example, Hangzhou’s strategy for building a learning city that involves all its citizens is based on a commitment to the ‘3 Ls’ of learning: lifelong, life-wide and life-deep’ (3Ls). In addition, Hangzhou has a ‘6 Ws’-strategy; ‘Who, What, When, Where, Why and Which’. The 3rd Shanghai Forum on Lifelong Learning brought together national and international experts to share their experiences and evaluate new approaches to developing and monitoring learning cities. The forum, which was held on 14 and 15 December 2015, was organized by the Shanghai Municipal Institute of Lifelong Education (SMILE), the Shanghai Municipal Government and the National Education Development Research Centre of the Ministry of Education of China. Cork City received the UNESCO Learning City Award at the 2nd International Conference on Learning Cities, which was held in Mexico City in September 2015. This makes Cork the first city in Ireland to receive the Award. On 17 December 2015, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Chris O’Leary, held a reception to celebrate this achievement and affirm the city’s continued commitment to lifelong learning. More...

The 2016 ELINET European Literacy Conference offers participants first-hand access to new research and good practices in all areas of literacy created over the past two years by members of the European Literacy Policy Network (ELINET). More than 230 participants, including international experts in different fields of literacy, are taking part in the conference, which runs from 20 to 22 January 2016. The Education Commission of Brazil’s House of Representatives, in cooperation with the UNESCO Brasilia Office, invited the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) to give a presentation on the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) to Brazil’s House of Representatives. The presentation, which took place on 10 November 2015, was open to the public and was attended by the mayors of Jaboatao dos Guararapes and Contagem. Following two successful International Conferences on Learning Cities in Beijing (2013) and Mexico City (2015), the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), which coordinates the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, invites expression of interest in hosting the 3rd International Conference on Learning Cities in 2017. This third Conference will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experience in building inclusive and sustainable learning cities and will assess the development of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. Together with the UNESCO offices in Abuja (Nigeria) and Dakar (Senegal), the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) will host a workshop to draft a sub-regional curriculum framework for the training of trainers in bilingual education. The workshop will bring together education specialists from West Africa and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) to work on producing the first draft of the sub-regional framework. Many countries in the West African sub-region are working to include African languages and cultures into their education systems by using bilingual education in their curricula. 
This is a pioneer reform process that aims to improve the quality of education by contextualizing learning in multilingual and multicultural African societies. More...
