http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. By now you have probably read Scott’s piece on Sweet Briar College’s decision to shut down at the end of this academic year. I’m sure that all of us feel just horrible for the  students, faculty, staff, and alumnae of Sweet Briar. Read more...

EDUCAUSE and Social Media

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. I’ve been a (friendly) critic of both the current EDUCAUSE website 3 Wishes for educause.edu, and of how EDUCAUSE has leveraged (or failed to leverage) social media beyond EDUCAUSE controlled channels for thought leadership in higher education - EDUCAUSE, Social Media, and Us. February Books

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. If I asked you to write down all the books you read in February, how would you go about constructing this list? My method is simple. I pull up my My Library on Audible and my Digital Orders on Amazon, do some cutting and pasting, and voila. Read more...

Math Geek Mom: 50 Years Ago

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Rosemarie Emanuele. When I teach the idea of the “intermediate value theorem” in Calculus, I often begin by helping my students visualize the concept. I tell them that if we (just East of Cleveland) wanted to visit Cedar Point Amusement Part (far West of Cleveland), we would need to cross the Cuyahoga River, which cuts Cleveland in half. Fortunately, there are many, (often architecturally interesting) bridges to help get us from one side to the other. Read more...

Our Piano Man

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Laura Tropp. There is an unusual level of conflict going on in our house these days centered around the piano. The children are constantly fighting over whose turn it is to practice and frequently I will see a line of children waiting to play. Plus, the music they are playing sounds pretty good and the songs are always recognizable. This is a far cry from just 6 months ago when I had to beg them to practice and the level of music they were playing was not that advanced. This can all be attributed to our new piano teacher and his unusual musical philosophy. Read more...

Learning New Tricks

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Susan O'Doherty. Yesterday ended nearly two years of chronic pain. I am still taking this in.
I've alluded here before to the interlocking medical issues I have been dealing with. Briefly, I have an autoimmune disorder that went berserk several years ago and required 6 months of corticosteroids to get it back in the cage. Read more...

University labour strife underscores cost of tenured academics

Go to the Globe and Mail homepageBy Simona Chiose. The battle between York University and almost 4,000 striking workers over the lack of job security for contract faculty is underscoring a major shift in how undergraduate students are educated across the country.
Even as access has greatly expanded, Canadian universities say they can no longer afford to deliver higher education through tenured academics who may spend more than a third of their time engaged in research. Instead, most universities have decided that, to staff their classrooms at reasonable cost, they must turn, in varying degrees, to contract instructors and teaching-track faculty. Read more...

Australian scientific research takes further hit as Government refuses to secure funding

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "cnet.com logo"By . Australian scientific research takes further hit as Government refuses to secure funding.
After last year's proposed budget redacted $111 million in funding from Australia's national science agency, the CSIRO, scientific research in Australia is set to take another funding blow to the tune of $150 million.
This National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme funding was set to come from Minister for Education and Training Christopher Pyne's higher-education reforms, which would see the deregulation of university fees and the privatisation of HECS governmental tertiary education loans, as well as a 20 percent cut in governmental funding to the higher education sector.
