Germany - university dropouts sought as skilled professionals

According to Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung DZHW (German centre for research on higher education and science studies), the dropout rate among bachelor students is 28%. Rates tend to be higher in technical, mathematical and natural science subjects. The DZHW does not provide absolute figures. The nationwide number of university dropouts is estimated at 100 000 per year.
Are all of them underachievers? Not at all. More and more companies compete for these ex-students. ‘University dropouts are an important target group and their numbers are considerable’, says Vera Demary, project manager at Kompetenzzentrum für Fachkräftesicherung KOFA (Competence centre for safeguarding skilled labour supply) at the Cologne institute for economic research.
KOFA has identified university dropouts as its special focus for the current funding period. According to Demary, so far only individual companies and model projects focus on this particular target group.
Further, Germany’s education minister Johanna Wanka announced an initiative aimed at winning over university dropouts for occupational careers in crafts.

Local community seeks Cedefop’s expertise

In April, Cedefop experts made presentations at information days organised by the vice-mayors of two municipalities in the Thessaloniki area.
Both events focused on career prospects, guidance, and skills and occupations in demand, in view of Greece's difficult economic situation and the most recent technological and social developments. They addressed pupils of the municipalities’ high schools and their parents and teachers. More...

Cedefop reviews VET data in European countries on the way to 2020

Did you know that adult participation in lifelong learning is almost three times the European Union (EU) average in Denmark? Or that 68% of enterprises in Estonia provide training (compared to 66% in the EU), and the percentage of early leavers from education and training in France is lower than the EU average?
You can find statistical information on vocational education and training (VET) and lifelong learning in European countries in Cedefop’s updated 2014 report.
