Look Forward, Not Back!

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/law.jpgBy Tracy Mitrano. A connection exists between this morning’s news of the super-breach of federal government databases and yesterday’s report on a new draft cyberlaw of the People Republic of China. Read more...

Ludicrous

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/law.jpgBy Tracy Mitrano. Zachery Anderson’s punishment for using a dating app to meet a girl and having sex is ludicrous. The crime is in the girl’s false reporting of her age, 17, not 14. Read more...

Is the 4th Amendment Dead in Cyberspace?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/law.jpgBy Tracy Mitrano. Over a year ago former director of both the NSA and CIA, Michael Hayden, flat out admitted, "we kill people based on metadata." He quickly distinguished between the metadata about which the debate was focused, telephone records, and other forms of surveillance metadata upon which covert actions are taken. Media Day at HarvardX

By Steven Mintz. “You didn’t get the memo?”
edX CEO Anant Agarwal gestured to himself and then to me. It took a few moments, but the participants attending Media Day at HarvardX saw that our attire – blue blazer with brass buttons, a relaxed blue pinstriped Oxford (sans tie) and gray khakis – matched. Read more...

Distinctive Excellence in Polytechnic Universities

By Thomas Carey. My prior post in this Higher Ed Beta column took a look backwards look at the historical development of Polytechnic Universities and a look forward to some new ways for strategically repositioning our evolving polytechnic universities as a special kind of university with their own distinctive excellence. I suggested that the direction of most interest for an evolving polytechnic university was to become ‘more poly’ rather than ‘more technic’. Read more...

Repositioning the Polytechnic University

By Thomas Carey. There was a bit of attention in IHE recently to the idea of a “Polytechnic University” as an element in rethinking institutional strategic position – and not all of it was positive. The transformation of Purdue University’s College of Technology was one development highlighted. Read more...

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. Higher education in the United Kingdom is changing rapidly. Causing consternation for some and jubilation for others, these changes are quite fascinating. 5 Years with Inside Higher Ed

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. This was a momentous week for me. On Monday, I counted 5 years of blogging at Inside Higher Ed. It was the summer of 2010 when Scott Jaschik asked me if I would write for IHE. I was excited to write for what was then, and still is, my favorite higher education news site.
While the header graphic on this blog is in desperate need of a refresh, I hope that the content that I've crafted in this collection of posts has been of use to readers.
This is the 330th post on this site and I am very thankful that I get to continue writing essays on social media, technology, organizational culture, professional development, learning, teaching, career development, leadership, mobile apps, accessibility, engagement, etc. Read more...
