Drexel Will Phase Out Sacramento Programs

HomeDrexel University has decided to stick to its Philadelphia home. The university announced major plans in 2008 to build up both undergraduate and graduate programs in Sacramento. Then in 2011 the university called off the plans to build an undergraduate campus and said it would stick with graduate programs. But on Thursday the university announced it would phase out the graduate programs as well, after giving students time to finish their degrees. Read more...

Yale Clears Police Officer Who Detained Student

HomeA Yale University report has cleared the officer who briefly detained a black student at gunpoint, renewing a debate over racial profiling on campuses. The student who was detained was not the actual suspect, but the student's father was a New York Times columnist who publicized the case. The Yale report found no violations of procedures. Better Education Options Urged for California Prisoners

HomeA new report is pushing for access to more effective college opportunities for prisoners and formerly incarcerated people in California. In the late 1970s, all of California’s state prisons had in-person college programs, and 15 community colleges offered support services for people with criminal histories, according to a report titled "Degrees of Freedom." New Scams Targeting University Employees

HomeFaculty and staff at Carnegie Mellon University who last weekend clicked on a link in an e-mail titled "Your salary raise information" were disappointed when they didn't find a pay increase but an attempt to steal their personal information. Canadian Funding Agencies Release Open Access Policy

HomeCanada's three largest funding agencies on Friday released joint guidelines to ensure open-access publication of the research they support. Called the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications, the guidelines will require all peer-reviewed publicly funded research be made available for free online within 12 months of publication. Referendum in Britain in Support of Israel Boycott Passes

HomeA referendum to support the boycott of Israeli academic institutions at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, passed with a 73 percent majority. Organizers of the referendum said Friday that 2,056 total votes were cast in the school-wide referendum, which was proposed by the Students' Union and open to students, faculty, nonacademic employees, university governors and outsourced workers, such as cleaning and security staff.
