A report released today by the Foundation for Young Australians called Renewing Australia’s Promise shows that for the first time young Australians are unlikely to be better off than their parents. While the report shows that eeducational attainment has risen significantly over the last 30 years, with young people 1.6 times more likely to finish school and 1.4 times more likely to gain tertiary qualifications, it also shows that almost a third of all young people are unemployed or underemployed, and for those who have gone to university they have average debts of $24,000. The formative evaluation commenced in 2011 when the scheme was being set up, in order to provide an independent perspective on the development of the scheme and its implementation. The evaluation is being conducted in a series of interlocking phases designed to capture longitudinal data from a range of stakeholders. The first-year report focused on the development of the scheme before implementation in 2011-12 and was published in May 2012 with an addendum and summary of year one in March 2013. The unit is a central resource for practitioners and institutions, and coordinates the sharing of knowledge relating to student engagement at a national level.
