Knowledge Age: Universities are well-positioned to prepare students for challenges of life

By Kris Magnusson and Laurie Anderson, Vancouver Sun. Since medieval times, universities have served a critical role in the building of prosperous, democratic and civil societies. Universities have traditionally been centres for the creation and dissemination of specialized knowledge. The expectation was that students would go to a “place of learning,” and acquire knowledge by listening to an expert or master. During time, as more students wanted to acquire knowledge, small gatherings were replaced by attendance in classrooms and lecture halls, but the emphasis remained on the master who possessed knowledge. Universities still issue master’s degrees, indicating that the holder of such a degree has “mastered” the complexity and depth of a subject area. More...

ESU welcomes ECJ ruling on third-country nationals

ESU - European Students' UnionThe European Students’ Union (ESU) strongly supports the recent ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) that facilitates the studies of third-country nationals within the European Union (EU).
Visas and residency permits are among the largest obstacles that non-EU nationals face when seeking studies in the EU. Simpler administrative immigration procedures can greatly increase the participation and mobility of non-EU countries and students that are involved in the Bologna Process, such as the Western-Balkans, Eastern Europe and Southern Caucasus. Is expanding access to higher education worth the price?

OECD educationtodayBy Dirk Van Damme Head of the Innovation and Measuring Progress division, Directorate for Education and Skills. As Education at a Glance 2014  found, education systems continue to expand and levels of educational attainment continue to rise throughout the world. Across OECD countries in 2012, 32% of 25-64 year-olds – over 220 million individuals – held a tertiary degree. Among young adults, the proportion is even higher: 40%. Never before have so many people attained that level of education. Just 12 years earlier, only 22% of 25-64 year-olds had a tertiary education. The tertiary attainment rate among 25-34 year-olds grew by an average of 3.4% per year between 2000 and 2012, and in most countries, it is not likely to slow down anytime soon. Read more...

Who is most likely to be left back at school?

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRP4qIrraW46oa4crCboqTzadd3IE4yTumRAbMvuvR527xT31xml_tozi4By Marilyn Achiron Editor, Directorate for Education and Skills. Being left back at school was no joke; and the practice continues to take a toll on millions of students every year – even though it does little to benefit the individual student who is required to repeat a grade.
The latest PISA in Focus highlights how successive rounds of PISA have found that grade repetition shows no clear benefit, either for individual students or for school systems as a whole. Read more...
