Universities agree need for Arab world mobility scheme

An Erasmus-style exchange programme for the Arab world gained ground at the second Arab-Euro higher education conference held in Jordan last month. “It received substantial support from people who are at universities and also contribute to policy-making in the region,” said Michael Gaebel, head of higher education policy at the European University Association.
There were 250 participants – including 150 university leaders and vice-presidents as well as officials – at the AECHE conference held in Amman, Jordan, from 10-12 June and titled “Strengthening Arab-Euro University Collaboration: The importance of regional mobility”. Read more...

Top universities fail to attract students from poorer backgrounds

The United Kingdom’s élite universities are failing to attract students from disadvantaged backgrounds despite making “considerable” efforts and offering financial support to offset the impact of higher tuition fees. A report from the Office for Fair Access, or OFFA, says the top 20% of young people from the most advantaged backgrounds are more than six times more likely to attend a top university than the most disadvantaged 40%. La Communauté d'universités et établissements Sorbonne Universités

La COMUE Sorbonne Universités est issue du PRES Sorbonne Universités crée sous forme de Fondation de Coopération Scientifique (F.C.S.) par le décret du 22 juin 2010 puis modifié par le décret n°2012-600 du 27 avril 2012.

Les statuts de la COMUE ont été adoptés en conseil d'administration le 15 juillet 2014 ; ils seront soumis à l'avis du C.N.E.S.E.R. le 21 juillet 2014. La COMUE Sorbonne Universités comprend 11 membres, dont 2 établissements ayant un volet spécifique au présent contrat de site :

Regional support centre for French language studies Wagdy Sawahel

In an effort to boost quality at French language centres in universities, HERACLES – the World Forum of Language Centres in Higher Education – plans to open a regional office in the Middle East to provide support services for countries including Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Lebanon and Jordan.

Bitter race rows follow 20-year democracy celebrations

The death of popular Stellenbosch Vice-chancellor Russel Botman sparked accusations that he had been ‘killed’ by Afrikaner conservatives, while Cape Town was fiercely attacked by black intellectuals after unveiling a new student admissions policy.
