Drop in students fuels further net migration fall

Times Higher EducationBy Simon Baker. Net migration to the UK has fallen again mainly thanks to a 23 per cent drop in the number of students coming to the country to study. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics today show that 190,000 migrants arrived to study in the year to September 2012, a fall of 56,000 on the previous year. Study remains the most common reason stated for migrating to the UK, according to the ONS. Overall the data show that there was a net flow of 153,000 migrants to the UK in the year ending September 2012, 10,000 below the previous quarter’s figure of 163,000. More...

Personal statement: 10 most overused opening sentences

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy . Ucas have compiled a list of the 10 most overused opening sentences in personal statements. Whatever you do, don't begin yours with any of these... Writing a personal statement is possibly the most important – and certainly the most time-consuming – aspect of the university application process. It's also rather tricky. I haven't dared dust off my own to see how many times I used the word "passionate", but the truth is it isn't easy to be original. Nearly 700,000 students applied for university last year – that's a lot of times for tutors to have to read "I have always been fascinated by ...[insert subject]". Ucas insider's guide to the personal statement. Read more...

£222 million cost of 'free' university degrees for English in independent Scotland

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy , Scottish Political Editor. A separate Scotland’s taxpayers would have to spend at least an extra £222 million extra per year giving students from the remainder of the UK ‘free’ university tuition, a leading economist has estimated. Professor David Bell, of Stirling University, predicted at least another 4,000 school leavers from England, Wales and Northern Ireland would study north of the Border after separation. Currently SNP ministers are forced to extend their promise of a "free" higher education for Scottish students to their peers from other EU countries under European anti – discrimination laws. However, this protection does not apply within the same EU member state, allowing Scottish universities to charge youngsters from the rest of the UK up to £36,000 for a degree. Read more...

Why the internet will never replace universities

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy Kel Fidler. All the recent hype about online higher education and 'Moocs' misses the point, says Kel Fidler – universities have been doing it for years. Read any article about online higher education and I guarantee you will come across the much-touted ‘MOOCs’ – massive open online courses – as well as references to, perhaps, gamification, crowd-sourcing and even avatars. While such developments are undoubtedly fascinating, they present online learning as something futuristic – a new development and consequently, a new threat to many UK universities. But this is just not the case. Online learning is nothing new for UK higher education. Forward-thinking institutions and their partners have been doing it for years, as a natural extension of their existing provision. Read more...

Labour: make work experience compulsory and axe 'EBacc'

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy . Compulsory work experience will be reintroduced in schools under a Labour plan to get teenagers ready for the jobs market, the Daily Telegraph has learnt. The party is planning to reverse a Government decision to make two-week work placements an optional requirement before the end of school, it emerged. Shadow ministers admitted that too many placements in the past involved “making tea and doing the photocopying” but insisted that high-quality work experience was vital. It was also revealed that Labour is proposing to scrap the Coalition’s English Baccalaureate – a school league table measure that rewards pupils for gaining good GCSEs in a range of academic subjects – amid claims it “distorts” children's’ options and stops them studying the arts and engineering. The French protect their language like the British protect their currency

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/d700dbf8c1c58ee4662f6874d69baad6a401fa52/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . A row over using English in universities has blown up in France, where language is at the heart of the national identity. The front page of Libération, one of France's leading dailies, was printed entirely in English on Tuesday. "Let's do it," ran the banner headline. Sounding like a Nike slogan penned by Cole Porter, it in fact referred to a new bill, which, if passed, would allow some university courses to be taught in English. Inside the paper (and in French), the editorialists urged their compatriots to "stop behaving like the last representatives of a besieged Gaulish village". The nod to Asterix – the diminutive comic-strip hero who punches above his weight thanks to his cunning and occasional swigs of magic potion – is highly significant. For decades, France has identified with the plucky denizens of Asterix's village, the last corner of Gaul to hold out against Roman invasion. This is how the French fancy themselves: besieged but unbowed – a kind of Gallic take on the Blitz spirit. The reason Uderzo and Goscinny's books resonated at the time of their publication is that they replayed the myth of French resistance in the context of the cold war. This time around the invaders were no longer German or Roman, but American. Asterix's first outing (in a long-defunct magazine called Pilote) occurred in 1959, the year Charles de Gaulle became president, and grammarian Max Rat coined the word "franglais". My contention is that this is not purely coincidental. Read more...

Public engagement: what does it mean in higher education today?

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/d700dbf8c1c58ee4662f6874d69baad6a401fa52/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . Join our experts Friday 31 May from 12pm BST to discuss benefits, drawbacks, media, message and innovative practice. What does public engagement actually mean? It's one of those terms for which it's hard to find a single definition that reflects its wider purpose and the many forms it takes within the higher education sector. The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement has given it a go and come up with this: "Public engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit."
If sharing research and university news with society communicates the benefits of higher education, is a simple press release a form of public engagement – or is the process more sophisticated? What innovative and exciting ways are universities putting engagement into practice, or making their practice engaging? A few come to mind which have made particular waves: Bright Club, which started at UCL and is now running in seven locations around the UK, encourages researchers to take to the stage and describe their work in a funny way. Religious studies and theology

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/d700dbf8c1c58ee4662f6874d69baad6a401fa52/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifStudy of religious belief systems, including Christian theology, Islam and Buddhism. League table for religious studies and theology.
What will I learn?

Rightly or wrongly, religion has played a major role in political and international events over the past few years, so understanding why things are said and done in the name of a higher being is more important now than it has ever been. The vast majority of the world's population profess faith in some form of deity, so religious studies is still a vibrant degree to study. Depending on the course, you will learn the traditions of the world's major religions - Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. You will study their historical, theological, anthropological and sociological implications. You will learn when and why religions have clashed in the past, which may help you understand how they coexist today. Read more...

The UK's immigration crackdown will lead to a loss of international talent

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/d700dbf8c1c58ee4662f6874d69baad6a401fa52/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . Cuts to foreign student numbers mean a future Indian prime minister might end up studying in Sydney rather than Sussex. The government is making significant progress towards its target of reducing net migration to the UK to less than 100,000 per year. Figures published on Thursday showed estimated net migration down to 153,000 in the year ending September 2012 (from 242,000 in the previous year). But this has come at a cost – in their haste to meet the target, ministers have changed the rules to keep out migrants who can bring huge benefits to the UK. The decline in immigration has been driven in large part by falling numbers of international students. Focused on their target, it has made sense, at least in the short term, for ministers to focus on students, simply because they are the largest single group arriving in any given year (accounting for around 60% of non-EU immigration).
