Push to lure university students to Canberra

By Noel Towell. The ACT government says Canberra's universities will benefit from a new program to promote the city's tertiary sector. The territory budget next month will contain spending of $2 million over four years to establish "StudyCanberra", aimed at making the capital a "city of first choice" for interstate and international students. The news will be welcomed by the city's two universities, reeling from federal government funding cuts, with the University of Canberra set to lose $8.3 million in the next three years and the ANU looking at $51 million in cuts in two years. Third-level reform plan welcomed

A substantial reform of Ireland’s higher-education sector will see the creation of three technological universities, four regional clusters and the rationalisation of teacher training and art education, the Minister for Education and Skills has said.
Proposals to accomplish this were published by Ruairí Quinn yesterday and will bring about a major consolidation of the institute of technology sector and foster greater coherence between the education system and national priorities, particularly those in the economic and enterprise areas. France's Message to Science: Help Us Fix the Economy

On Tuesday, the National Assembly approved a new law that aims to simplify the national landscape for research and higher education and make it more efficient, better able to address societal and economic challenges, and more competitive at the European level. The bill, which comes hand in hand with a new strategic plan for France's research priorities, also gives the government a greater role in coordinating research. Admission of women students soars to more than 100,000

The number of women students entering Kenyan universities rose at the fastest rate ever – by more than 30% – last year, and for the first time there are more than 100,000 female students in higher education, new government data show. Kenya’s recently released Economic Survey 2013, a document that tracks annual economic data across all sectors, showed that there were some 105,115 female students enrolled in universities in 2012, up from 80,560 the year before. PhDs abroad – The case of Arabs from Israel

The United States is the main country of destination for Arab academics from Israel who intend to obtain a PhD abroad, because the US grants Fulbright scholarships at the doctoral level in any field to students with academic excellence who are engaged in social activities and community service, and who have leadership abilities. The Fulbright foundation has awarded scholarships and research grants to more than 1,300 Israeli academics, including Arab academics, since the establishment of the fund. Since 2007, the fund has allocated grants to eight to 10 Arab students from Israel each year intending to obtain higher degrees, especially PhDs. Israel has eight universities that include about 5,800 senior lecturers and 2,334 lecturers with no tenure. Read more...

First student loan scheme bill passes second reading

ByTunde Fatunde. A bill to create a student loan scheme – called a Higher Education Bank – has passed a second reading in the national assembly and is expected to be approved soon. As expected, there was jubilation among students over the scheme, which is unprecedented in Nigerian higher education. Student beneficiaries would receive sufficient funding to pay for their higher education and would begin repayment two years after finishing their studies. However, some lecturers called for caution regarding the loan scheme’s implementation. Read more...

New initiatives to reform higher education announced
