The discussion concerning MOOCs at ETH Zurich has led the university to develop the TORQUE concept, which focuses on transforming traditional lecture series into ‘flipped classroom’ sequences by deploying online courses as self-learning preparation. panOpen – new OER platform launched

Survey reveals the training potential of MOOCs for web skills

The first results of an online survey which was carried out amongst students, entrepreneurs, leaders of innovation support programs, developers, and MOOC providers are just released. The survey aimed to identify the web skills which are most in demand and evaluate whether or not these are being covered by the current MOOC supply. The goal is to reveal insights that could help strengthen and enhance the use of MOOCs for web talent across Europe, one of the objectives of the European project Foster Web Talent by Encouraging the Use of Massive Open Online Courses Focused on Web Skills. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) encourage passive learning among professionals

The findings of a recent study carried out by researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University and Harvard University show that MOOCs encourage passive learning among professionals.
Funded by the Gates Foundation, the study explored the role of MOOCs in supporting and enabling professional learning, or learning for work.
The study recommends that MOOC designers should focus on utilising the diversity of MOOC participants, and encourage professionals to link learning to their everyday work practices. Findings also show that MOOCs often miss the opportunity to exploit the knowledge and expertise that diverse groups of professionals can bring to courses.
