In May 2012, faculty from Harvard University and MIT teamed up to create a massive open online course (MOOC) platform for students and institutions of higher education alike. But unlike its for-profit MOOC peers Coursera and Udacity, edX—the new venture—was guided by more academic, pedagogical goals. Russia’s education minister implored the country’s schools Tuesday to work on attracting more international students after China soundly beat Russia in an international ranking of universities.

Keeping this in mind, Members of International Schools’ Association, MISA had invited, William Bickerdike, CIE regional manager for South Asia and Madhav Welling, pro-vice chancellor, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies to guide teachers and principals of the member schools on higher education opportunities within India. L'université propose de nombreux débouchés, divers et variés, mais les salaires espérés à la sortie sont-ils élevés ? Le ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche vient de dévoiler les résultats de la quatrième enquête nationale sur l'insertion professionnelle des diplômés de l'université, réalisée entre décembre 2012 et avril 2013. Où en sont les jeunes diplômés de 2010 issus d'universités, 30 mois après leur diplômation ? Selon l'enquête annuelle sur l'insertion des étudiants diplômés publiée par le ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche, six sur dix évoluent dans une entreprise privée. Dans leur ensemble, ils semblent bien intégrés sur le marché du travail, mais il faut mentionner l'existence de disparités et d'inégalités… 
Alors que son autonomie pose encore quelques petits soucis, l'université semble relativement remplir sa mission de formation et d'insertion. Le gouvernement travaille actuellement sur un encadrement encore plus rigoureux des stages. Un projet de loi est attendu pour le début de l'année prochaine. Le journal Les Echos a pris connaissance du texte, presque définitif. Les abus des entreprises sont donc dans le viseur du gouvernement, qui compte bien punir les entreprises qui usent et abusent de stagiaires. 
Il y a du nouveau dans le projet de loi relatif à l'encadrement des stages : la députée Chaynesse Khirouni, en charge du projet, vient de préciser le texte qui devrait être examiné dès février prochain. Le quotidien Les Echos, qui a pu consulter cette version presque définitive du texte, révèle les dispositions que souhaite prendre l'Exécutif pour lutter contre les abus en matière de stages, tant de la part des entreprises que des établissements de formation. The recent New York Times coverage of a University of Pennsylvania study of 16 Coursera courses has helped solidify the new conventional wisdom about MOOCs: They have terrible completion rates. The Times reports that “only about 4 percent completed the courses,” which jibes with the Penn press release, titled “PENN GSE STUDY SHOWS MOOCS HAVE RELATIVELY FEW ACTIVE USERS, WITH ONLY A FEW PERSISTING TO COURSE END” and accompanying slide deck, which says, under “Emerging Conclusions,” that “Few ‘persist’ to course end.” 
This way of thinking about MOOCs is misleading. It mostly reflects how the traditional college mindset continues to dominate and limit the public understanding of what higher education can and should mean. More...
