http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Scott Jaschik. President Obama on Friday surprised legal educators by saying that cutting law school from three years to two would yield a less expensive education for students. Inside Higher Edasked those on Twitter to suggest (in Twitter-length replies) other ways to cut costs. Here are some of the responses... Read more...

In 2003, the National Office for Equity of Access to Higher Education (Government Ireland) was set up within the Higher Education Authority to make it easier for groups who are under-represented in higher education to go on to third level education. These groups include those who are disadvantaged socially, economically and culturally, mature students and students with a disability. The national office works with all colleges and universities and is supported by an advisory group representing students, parents, the education sector and social partners. Don't Call It a MOOC

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Carl Straumsheim. Two University of Texas at Austin psychology professors will Thursday night take the stage for the fall semester’s first session of Introduction to Psychology. Their audience will consist of a production crew and their equipment. In their years of working together, the professors’ research has shown their students benefit from computer-based learning to the point where they don’t even need to be physically present in the classroom.
Just don’t call it a MOOC. The university styles the class as the world’s first synchronous massive online course, or SMOC (pronounced “smock”), where the professors broadcast their lectures live to the about 1,500 students enrolled. Read more...

College for Free

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Ry Rivard. Could public colleges be free?
Yes, says the head of the union for University of California’s 4,000 instructors and librarians.
How?
Trim non-essential functions, redirect a bunch of money and end tax breaks that mostly benefit wealthy college-goers’ families, argues University Council-American Federation of Teachers President Bob Samuels. Of course, not everyone would agree with his definition of non-essential, particularly researchers. Read more...

Boost for Udacity Project

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Carl Straumsheim. Two months after San Jose State University announced it would put its partnership with the online course provider Udacity on "pause," university officials on Wednesday touted results from the summer cohort as “significantly better” and said the project will not be disrupted by a hiatus lasting through the fall semester. The partnership, known as SJSU Plus, was unveiled with great fanfare in January, with many politicians -- including California Governor Jerry Brown -- saying it showed the way for providing inexpensive college education for a mass audience. The project then skidded to a halt in July as the first three for-credit courses -- college algebra, elementary statistics and entry-level math -- posted pass rates between 23.8 and 50.5 percent. The university announced it would spend the fall semester evaluating the project and its results, then reopen enrollment for the 2014 spring semester. Read more...

Alliance for Equity in Higher Education

http://www.guninetwork.org/utils_images/guni-1/image_preview

The Alliance for Equity in Higher Education, a program managed by IHEP (Institute for Higher Education Policy), represents the shared interests of Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Combined, these minority-serving institutions (MSIs) represented by AIHEC, HACU and NAFEO, educate more than one-third of all students of color in the United States. MSIs disproportionately address the needs of low-income, minority students while contributing significantly to generating a highly skilled workforce, developing civic and community responsibility, and producing citizens who are exceptionally attuned to the increasingly diverse country in which we live. Brazil Scholarship Program Grows

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Elizabeth Redden. You may be hearing more Portuguese in the hallways on your campus this semester. More than 4,000 Brazilian undergraduates will be studying at universities in the United States this fall through the Brazil Scientific Mobility Undergraduate Program (formerly called Science Without Borders), a more than twofold increase over last fall. The scholarship program, launched by the Brazilian government in 2011, has quickly become an important source of international students -- and revenue -- for many American universities. Read more...
