 The work of the Council of Europe in the field of higher education and research focuses on issues related to the recognition of qualifications, public responsibility for higher education and research, higher education governance and other fields relevant for the establishment of the European Higher Education Area by 2010. QAA guides universities on information to students

Ensuring prospective students get accurate information on workload, class sizes and teaching is the aim of new guidance from the quality watchdog. The Quality Assurance Agency’s guidance is aimed at supporting universities and colleges in making information available to current and prospective students, and at advising students on the questions to ask about teaching when applying for a course. “There is now more choice than ever before of where and what to study, and universities and colleges need to get it right in the information they provide to their current and future students,” said Jayne Mitchell, director of research, development and partnerships at the QAA.  Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), founded in the early 90s, is an Association of Universities from countries in the Euro-Mediterranean basin. UNIMED’s main aim is to develop scientific and educational cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region, in order to contribute to the process of integration between the two Mediterranean shores. Obama’s plan to rate college generates major debate among academic leaders

President Obama’s pledge to begin federal ratings of colleges by 2015 has touched off widespread debate in academia, exposing a divide that can be seen in the reactions of higher education leaders, such as those at two Maryland schools that are almost polar opposites. University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh endorses the plan Obama announced Aug. 22 to rate colleges on the value they deliver for students and link federal student aid to those findings. “At stake is whether higher education remains the great equalizer of conditions in our democracy,” said the leader of the 37,200-student public flagship in College Park. Oxford 'risking its reputation' by taking in wealthy foreigners

Oxford University risks undermining its reputation by accepting wealthy foreign students with poor grades for “purely commercial reasons”, an internal report warns. The “associate students”, who generally have lower average grades than a typical Oxford undergraduate, pay as much as £13,000 a term and can stay for up to a year. Although the students are not officially part of the university, senior figures said they “pose severe reputational risk” because their academic standards are “often low”. The report said that colleges, which are independent of the university and are free to set their own admissions policies, granted them admission for “purely commercial” reasons. Read more...
