China weighs the value of American liberal arts

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Gerard A Postiglione, The Chronicle of Higher Education. In August, New York University officially started its Shanghai programme, welcoming nearly 300 undergraduates – 150 from China, 100 from the United States and 45 from other parts of the world. As NYU-Shanghai begins in earnest, let’s examine why China has enticed American universities to its shores.

In the court of academia

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Paul De Frijters. One of the stranger beasts to emerge from education reform in recent decades has been the Australian university. Although there are still about 38 of them left in the wild, they are nevertheless endangered. Indeed, their survival is threatened by self-harm – which can extend as far as their taking the axe to perfectly healthy faculties and schools within their domain; for instance, the axing of the arts faculty at the Queensland University of Technology, whose underlying budget at the time was in the black, and where its many students were transferred to other faculties with otherwise low numbers; or the move of the school of economics at the University of Sydney from the business faculty to the arts faculty. More...

Election outcome – More gloom for universities

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Geoff Maslen. Academics and professional staff inhabiting Australia’s 39 public universities could hardly be more pessimistic about the future as the nation head to the polls next Saturday to elect a new federal government. It now seems certain the conservative parties, headed by controversial Opposition leader Tony Abbott, will replace the Labor Party administration that has held office since 2007. The only other certainty for higher education is that no matter who wins, the prospects are grim. More...

Looking beyond the Shanghai university rankings

By Karen MacGregor. Interviews with leaders of institutions featured in the Academic Ranking of World Universities culminated recently in The Shanghai Jiao Tong Top 200 Research Universities Encyclopedia – an effort “to go beyond the numbers associated with rankings to better understand some of the most important institutions in our collective future”. The interviews identified shared visions and trends, including the need for more involvement with the private sector in research, the importance of student mobility and developing entrepreneurial skills, mission shifts towards economic development, and the role of universities in tackling global challenges. More...

Call to produce employable graduates

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Wagdy Sawahel. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has called on the government to build skills and tailor higher education graduates towards fields and businesses required in the labour force and for national development. The call was made on 20 August in the king's speech marking the 60th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People. Higher education in Morocco faces numerous challenges. In the World Economic Forum’s 2012-13 Global Competiveness Report, out of 144 countries Morocco was ranked 116 for university-industry collaboration, 104 for quality of research institutions, 101 for higher education and training, 97 for innovation, 75 for technological readiness, 53 for quality of maths and science education and 38 for availability of scientists and engineers. More...

Students and guardians reject new British visa bond

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Tunde Fatunde. There is palpable anger and disappointment among Nigerians who have gained admission to British universities for the upcoming academic session. Students already in UK institutions are also unhappy about a new ‘visa bond’ scheme to be implemented against ‘high risk’ visitors by the David Cameron administration.
The measure has already sown confusion among British admission agencies in Nigeria, who have worked hard to convince wealthy Nigerians to send their children to universities in the UK, and has thrown students interested in studying in the UK into a quandary.
The new visa scheme will impose £3,000 (US$4,740) in charges on unspecified visa applicants thought to be ‘high risk visitors’ from Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. More...

Opposition promises A$100 million ‘New Colombo Plan’

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Geoff Maslen. As part of its goal of winning government next weekend, Australia’s federal Opposition has promised A$100 million (US$89 million) over five years to create a ‘New Colombo Plan’ that will offer 300 undergraduate Australians the chance to study for one or two semesters in the Asian region each year. The scheme would be the reverse of the original Colombo plan, in which 40,000 future leaders from Asia came to study in Australia through the 1950s to the 1980s. More...

Government proposes changes to research fund

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy John Gerritsen. Eleven years after the introduction of the country's NZ$250 million (US$195 million) research fund for tertiary institutions, the New Zealand government is proposing only minor changes to it. The Performance Based Research Fund, or PBRF, has evaluated the quality of research at institutions that provide degrees and postgraduate qualifications three times since it was introduced in 2002 and is now under review. The government has published a discussion document and is now consulting on possible changes to the scheme, which will be worth NZ$300 million (US$234 million) a year by the 2016-17 financial year. More...

Universities ‘should give more IP to business’

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/magazine/graphics/logo.pngBy . Universities should give more intellectual property over to small- and medium-sized British businesses. That is the view of Andy Hopper, the outgoing president of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, who steps down from the role next month.
He said that taxpayers were funding the creation of intellectual property in universities, “so it seems reasonable that more of this is made available to UK SMEs that are best positioned to add value and commercialise it”.
He suggested that in return, universities take a 1 or 2 per cent shareholding in the company, which would be “more of a goodwill gesture than a conventional transaction”. More...
