Advanced technologies, professional competences and skills are crucial when fighting climate change and securing energy supply. By 2050, the EU aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95% against 1990 levels. To meet this target, Europe needs the research, education and innovation potential of universities. The General Assembly of the European University Association elected Rolf Tarrach as its new President. Representing more than 300 EUA members, the General Assembly gathered at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where it also elected five new Board members who will serve for a period of four years (2015-2019).
They are:
- Wieslaw Banyś, Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice and President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland.
- Holger Burckhart, Rector of the University of Siegen, Germany.
- Jean Chambaz, President of Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6), France.
- Martine Rahier, Rector of the University of Neuchâtel and President of swissuniversities.
- Mari Sundli Tveit, Rector of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. More...

On 20 April the Committees of the European Parliament responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs and for Budgets adopted their joint report on the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI). The report removes any reference to Horizon 2020 as a source to support the fund.
Indeed the Committees propose to fill the fund gradually in the annual budgetary procedure until it reaches €8 billion by 2022. More...

Ukraine has signed an agreement with the EU that will allow it to participate in Horizon 2020, giving the country’s researchers, innovators and businesses the chance to benefit from the EU’s €80 billion research programme.
The Agreement for the Association of Ukraine to Horizon 2020, signed by Carlos Moedas at a ceremony in Kiev last month, will see the country renew its membership of the EU research community. More...
