Don't Trust Tech Bloggers

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. Below is an e-mail that I received this week offering me a free TouchPico if I would write about the product on IHE. The offer was for a free TouchPico if the blog piece resulted in 7 people pledging on Indiegogo.
Initially I was going to X out the TouchPico name, as I don’t want to give this company any free publicity. I decided to keep the company name visible because I realized that other bloggers are probably getting this request. Read more...

Here Come the Data Scientists

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. A few days after the Hewlett sponsored gathering Learning with MOOCs wrapped, one word keeps buzzing through my brain: and that word is data.
This was less a MOOC workshop than a coming out party for the postsecondary learning-focused data scientists. Read more...

8 Campus Technologies That I'm Surprised Still Exist

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. What technologies do you see on your campus that you thought would history by 2014?
Here are my nominations for 8 campus technologies that I’m surprised have hung on:
1. Microsoft Office: MS Office is the granddaddy of un-killable technology. This expensive and bloated suite of applications is the habit that we can’t shake. Most days I find myself entering numbers into an Excel spreadsheet, preparing a PowerPoint presentation, and following Track Changes in Word. Read more...

Tips for New Students

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. The goings-on in Ferguson are too disheartening for words, so in the interest of preserving my mental health, I’m focusing closer to home.  Based on years of observation, here are some tips for students who are about to start their first semester at a community college. If you’re a student about to start at a community college, or if you know someone who is, I hope these are helpful. Read more...

WIA

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. In journalism, “burying the lede” refers to putting the most interesting part of a story so deep within it that casual readers may miss it.  For example, the New Yorker had a piece last week on Ferguson, in which it mentioned in passing that the law that allows local police to take inexpensive possession of old military weaponry requires them to use it within a calendar year.  To me, that was both shocking and clarifying, but it was in the middle of a paragraph in the middle of the story. The New York Times did something similar yesterday in a story on WIA, or the Workforce Investment Act. Read more...

Cohorts and Critical Mass

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Yesterday I attended a statewide meeting of community college and career center people to discuss various projects we’ve been working on to help displaced workers find their way through our systems to employable credentials and actual jobs. It was heartening in some ways and frustrating in others, which is to be expected; the goals are good and the successes real, but if it were easy, it would have been done years agoRead more...

Faith in Legislatures? A Response to Paul LeBlanc

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Paul LeBlanc, the president of Southern New Hampshire University, published a think piece in IHE on Monday about the possibility of a standardized, national college degree.  It’s well worth reading and chewing on at length, since it combines several strands of progressive educational innovation with a level of faith in state legislatures that could prove disastrous. Read more...

Proposal for Free Community College Tuition in Texas

HomeLeticia Van de Putte, a Texas State Senator and the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, last week announced a proposal for the state to pay the tuition costs for Texas high school graduates to attend community or technical college, the San Antonio Express News reported. The plan is modeled on the Tennessee Promise, which is a recently approved lottery-funded endowment to cover the first two years of community college. Read more...

Moody's: NCAA Changes Will Add Expenses, Hurt Less-Wealthy Programs

HomeThe recent restructuring of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's governance and the ruling against the NCAA in an antitrust class action will lead to new expenses for college sports and disproportionately affect the competitiveness of less wealthy programs, Moody's Investors Service predicted in a new report.
