Message from the SECRETARY GENERAL
WHAT KEEPS AN ASSOCIATION LIKE IAU TOGETHER? Among the important ingredients, I would cite a shared set of ideals and values among Members, their common interests and experiences, the possibilities to learn from one another, occasions for building relationships. Of course there is more – a dynamic leadership, tangible benefits such as publications, a helpful, knowledgeable, hard-working and responsive staff.
I believe that IAU offers all this and more and for this reason, this issue of IAU Horizons focuses more on the work of the Association (past, present and future), rather than offering an in depth look at a specific theme, as has been our tradition.
This is a particularly opportune time to share news about our work: a few months ago, we held a highly successful international conference at the University of Siena; in a few months, we will meet in Bangkok for the IAU 15th General Conference. You can read the report on the former, and learn more about the latter in the pages of this magazine.
It is also an opportune time to focus on IAU activities because the Association is in a transition, preparing a new 4-year strategic plan and thus taking stock of achievements of the past. With the help of the Administrative Board, IAU is aligning some of its work to the new UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reviewing the internationalization services it offers to Members, determining what niche to address in the broad debate about ICTs in higher education, consolidating the new programme for professional development (LGEU) and entering into new partnerships, for example with l’Etudiant in France and the Global Access to Postsecondary Education initiative.
The General Conference – 13-16 November 2016, hosted by a Consortium of Thai Universities led by Siam University and held at Chulalongkorn University, will help celebrate 100 years of higher education system in Thailand, see the election of a new President and Board of the IAU and launch the Association’s new strategic plan. QU’EST-CE QUI FAIT QU’UNE ASSOCIATION COMME L’AIU RESTE UNIE ? Parmi les ingrédients importants, je citerais notamment un ensemble commun d’idéaux et de valeurs entre les Membres, leurs expériences et intérêts communs, les possibilités d’apprendre des uns des autres, les opportunités de nouer des relations. Il y a bien entendu d’autres éléments – une direction dynamique, des avantages concrets comme les publications, un personnel investi, compétent et expérimenté.
Je considère que l’AIU offre toutes ces choses et encore davantage et c’est pour cette raison que ce numéro d’AIU Horizons porte sur le travail de l’Association (passé, présent et futur) au lieu de proposer un examen approfondi d’un thème spécifique, comme il est de coutume.
Le moment est particulièrement bien choisi pour partager des informations sur notre travail : il y a quelques mois, nous avons organisé une conférence internationale couronnée de succès à l’Université de Sienne ; dans quelques mois, nous nous réunirons à Bangkok pour la 15ème Conférence générale de l’AIU. Il est également opportun de focaliser notre attention sur les activités de l’AIU car l’Association est en phase de transition, en train de préparer un nouveau plan stratégique quadriennal et de dresser un bilan des réalisations passées. Avec l’aide du Conseil d’Administration, l’AIU aligne actuellement ses activités sur le nouveau programme des Nations Unies pour le développement durable, en réévaluant notamment les services d’internationalisation qu’elle propose à ses Membres, en déterminant la bonne voie à suivre dans le débat sur les TIC dans l’enseignement supérieur, en consolidant le nouveau programme de perfectionnement professionnel (LGEU) et en établissant de nouveaux partenariats, par exemple avec l’Etudiant en France et l’Initiative sur l’accès mondial à l’enseignement postsecondaire.
La Conférence générale – 13-16 novembre 2016, accueillie par un Consortium d’universités thaïlandaises dirigé par l’Université Siam et organisée à l’Université Chulalongkorn, contribuera à célébrer 100 ans d’enseignement supérieur en Thaïlande, élira le nouveau Président et Conseil d’Administration de l’AIU et lancera le nouveau plan stratégique de l’Association.
