Universities need scholarship that is more confusing – and more exciting

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . Free-ranging thinkers of earlier times, unconfined by university appointments, reflected on whatever they felt like. In 1866 the position of professor of mind and logic became vacant at my university. The two leading candidates were James Martineau, a Unitarian religious philosopher and brother of the writer and early social scientist Harriet Martineau, and the 24-year-old George Croom Robertson. Martineau was regarded as one of the leading thinkers of the day, while Robertson was barely known. More...

Universities have a key role to play in devolution across the UK

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . After a 'near-death' experience in the referendum, Scottish university chiefs must now get involved in devolution discussions. A few years ago in Venice I saw Bosch's Ascent of the Blessed. The painting is part of a set of four panels entitled Visions of the Hereafter. More...

Double and triple threats: When an extra degree pays off

By . As Ph.D.s struggle to find work, some professionals are going back to school to get third and fourth degrees. Sam Sadeghi’s career seems to be on a trajectory that only goes up. The electrical engineer has been working full-time in his field since graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Ryerson University in 2004. He continued to work full-time while pursuing a master’s in power electronics, which he earned from Ryerson in 2008. The only time he didn’t work was when he took a four-month leave in 2009 to take core courses for his master’s in business administration at Wilfrid Laurier University. More...

Knowledge Age: Universities are well-positioned to prepare students for challenges of life

By Kris Magnusson and Laurie Anderson, Vancouver Sun. Since medieval times, universities have served a critical role in the building of prosperous, democratic and civil societies. Universities have traditionally been centres for the creation and dissemination of specialized knowledge. The expectation was that students would go to a “place of learning,” and acquire knowledge by listening to an expert or master. During time, as more students wanted to acquire knowledge, small gatherings were replaced by attendance in classrooms and lecture halls, but the emphasis remained on the master who possessed knowledge. Universities still issue master’s degrees, indicating that the holder of such a degree has “mastered” the complexity and depth of a subject area. More...

The Ice Bucket Challenge and Other Phenomena: Four Ways Higher Ed Marketers Can Leverage Different Disciplines (Part 1)

The EvoLLLutionBy  - EvoLLLution. Just over a month ago, as you checked your Facebook account to see what your friends and family had been doing over the course of the previous hour/day/weekend/week — depending on your “Facebook frequency” — you couldn’t help noticing you or someone you knew was tagged to take the “Ice Bucket Challenge.” You saw them take the challenge, and then you saw them tag more people. Why Pundits Like to Say Education Isn't Changing. It is. It is!

http://www.hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. Contrary to all those books and op eds decrying the dismal intransigence of higher education and college professors in general, I am finishing an essay (this is an excerpt) and writing a new book on the future of higher education (to be published about 15 months from now by Basic Books--I have to write it first, everyone!!) that makes the exact opposite counter arugment. More...

Convergence

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/law.jpg?itok=7sode5LvBy Tracy Mitrano. Below is a paper I am writing for another purpose and a European audience, but in light of the current debate about accessibility and the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act I have decided to give IHE readers a first review option.  The main point of the article is that, for once, the developed world is converging on the same standards for accessibility: WCAG 2.0 AA as a minimum.  Higher education should take advantage of this convergence, no, wait, better yet: become a leader in promoting it. Yik Yak is an Anagram for Hot Mess

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. When I first heard about Yik Yak, it was being referenced in an article about cyberbullying at Chicago high schools. Recognizing that anonymous posts via the mobile app were hurting students via threats and intimidation, Yik Yak blocked access within defined electronic geo-fences. It was actually a classy maneuver. Read more...
