Connectivism: Informing Distance Education Theory, Pedagogy and Research

George Siemens’ (2005) article “Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age” has sparked both innovation and controversy. In stark contrast to Clark’s (1983) analogy that the truck delivering our groceries does not impact our nutrition, “only the content of the vehicle can influence achievement” (Clark, 1983, p. 445), Siemens suggests in the current knowledge economy “the pipe is more important than the content in the pipe” (Siemens, 2005, p.6). As the article unfolds, however, a more apt rendering may be that connectivism repositions media as a type of content, in that media, as tools of cognitive engagement, have the potential to transform the content of learning. WWW-based online education turns 20 this summer

By Phil Hill. I’m a little surprised that this hasn’t gotten any press, but Internet-based online education turns 20 this summer. There were previous distance education programs that used networks of one form or another as the medium (e.g. University of Phoenix established its “online campus” in 1989), but the real breakthrough is the use of the world wide web (WWW), effectively creating what people most commonly know as “the Internet”. The eLearning Africa Report 2014

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The eLearning Africa Report 2014
Various authors, eLearning Africa, June 18, 2014
Here's the 'speed read' from the SciDev summary:

  • Researchers surveyed 1,444 ICT experts across 55 African countries
  • They found laptops, smartphones, tablets and mobile phones as key to e-learning

These are findings from the e-Learning Africa report, recently released at a conference in Kenya (the link downloads a summary; under the terms of the CC license, I've uploaded a copy (136 page PDF) as an enclosure to this post - if you want to download from them you have to fill out a form giving them your personal information). Coursera Chief: Reach of Teaching Will Define Great Universities

By . In October 1993, in his first major speech as president of Yale University, Richard C. Levin talked about the importance of Yale’s becoming a “world university.” Great universities have a responsibility to drive global change, he said, and they achieve that primarily by nurturing future leaders and world-changing research inside their walled gardens. This spring, after two decades at the helm of Yale, Mr. Levin took a job as chief executive of Coursera, the online-education company. More...

3 Canvas Questions for InstructureCon

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. This is my first InstructureCon.  Hard to believe that this annual gathering of the Canvas community in Utah is already on its 4th iteration.
And I can barely say that I made this InstructureCon, as other work business has limited my participation to a pre-conference Advisory Board meeting. Oh well. Next year.
So my observations of InstructureCon will be limited. Hopefully you will be able to fill in what you are seeing as the big stories and key observations coming out of Park City
