The Murdoch Decision: Employee conditions on the line (Advocate 24 03)

The decision by the Fair Work Commission to terminate the Murdoch Enterprise Agreement on 26 September 2017 is now widely known in the university sector and increasingly in the wider community. While Murdoch has given undertakings to continue to apply various provisions of the Agreement including pay, superannuation, leave, and redundancy pay these undertakings are not legally enforceable and expire on 26 March next year. Time for Birmingham to admit defeat on higher education cuts

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is calling upon the Minister for Education and Training, Senator Simon Birmingham, to abandon his higher education funding cuts following yesterday’s announcement by Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) education spokesperson, Rebekha Sharkie, ruling out support for key elements of the government’s plans including cuts to the Commonwealth Grants Scheme, increases in student fees and lowering the repayment threshold on HELP debts. Manus Island humanitarian emergency

As the Manus Island detention centre closes today and the situation escalates into a humanitarian emergency, Academics for Refugees and NTEU suggest that you urgently contact your representatives today and in the coming days to urge them to commit the Australian government to bring the people affected by the centre closure to safety in Australia.
