Where Was Desktop Search When We Needed It?

Where Was Desktop Search When We Needed It?
Screencams - applications that let you record a video of your screen, with a voice-over - have been around for a long time. I remember the Lotus screencam product from 1997 or so. Screencasting is the distribution of screencam videos in (much) the same way that music is distributed in podcasts. Probably the best way to do it is to use Flash, the way this one does; it makes the viewing experience seamless. More...

ECMAScript Menu System

ECMAScript Menu System
Not only is this one of the better tutorials I've seen on the subject, it's also a nice way to demonstrate the separation of content and style, the way online content should be (and is almost never) designed. More...

Vancouver Aerial Tagging: Holy Flickr

Vancouver Aerial Tagging: Holy Flickr
This is interesting - an illustration of how Flickr uses comments in order to ember a link (and thumbnail) from one image into another image. The results can be spectacular - like this areal photo of Stanley Park in vancouver which is inset with photographs different people have taken of the part in different places. More...

Users Confuse Search Results, Ads

Users Confuse Search Results, Ads
According to the article (which cites, but doesn't link to, this this Pew report), "Only one in six users of internet search engines can tell the difference between unbiased search results and paid advertisements," even though the paid results are clearly marked as such. More...

Planet Digital Repository

Planet Digital Repository
Scott Leslie writes of the PLANET Digital Repository: On the surface just another repository project, but of interest to me because it is a current project from outside of Canada that seems to have picked up the Edusource Communications Layer (ECL) developed by Marek Hatala and others as part of the Edusource project. University of Arizona's DLearn - DSpace-based LOR
Scott Leslie points to this new learning object repository, DLearn, which runs on the DSpace content repository system. It should support metadata harvesting, but I found no link. More...

Memeorandum and Newsmap and...
Newsmap is of less interest to me, and it has been around for a while, though the use of graphical elements is creative. But I like Memeorandum a lot. Basically, the idea is to take a set of major news stories and to run the story with a headline and a short summary along with the posts of some leading bloggers about that story. More...

Image Annotator

Image Annotator
This is a beautiful use of Javascript, RDF and XSLT to create a system that annotates images. Go to the image link to see the final result first. Take a look at the page source; you'll see that it is written in RDF, and specifically, a combination of three schemas: Dublin Core, FOAF and an Image schema. Now go to the image annotator itself to see how the RDF file was generated. Follow the instructions on the page and generate your own RDF. More...

Why P2P File Sharing Is Good: The P2P Manifesto

Why P2P File Sharing Is Good: The P2P Manifesto
Robin Good links to and summarizes a pretty good manifesto on P2P (person-to-person) file sharing. The author's premise is that P2P is inevitable, that content owners cannot prevent people from sharing files on it, and that it is better for content owners in the long run (but they'll have to adapt their business plans). More...

WordPress Multi User (WMU)

WordPress Multi User (WMU)
A long-standing complaint about the use of WordPress, the free and open source blogging software, in an academic environment is that no multi-user version was available. With the launch of WordPress MU, this is no longer true. More...
