MyInternet: K-12 View

MyInternet: K-12 View
Looks at technology adoption from the perspective of K-12 schools. Good analysis, with a valuable diagram showing that most schools purchase smallish systems that 'nobody got fired for buying' - a reflection of a relatively slow uptake, small technology budgets and limited time for implementation (and consequent dependence on providers to support technological needs). Tasmania is cited as the exception that proves this rule - I wish I had more details on that. More...

Interoperability: Why does it matter?

Interoperability: Why does it matter?
"Why can't we do it?" asks Evan Arthur to kick off this astonishing workshop on technical standards for learning education and training held last week in Melbourne. "Because it's just too damn hard." Kudos to the organizers for getting this up so quickly, while it's still fresh. In today's OLDaily I carry nine links from the workshop - yes, nine. More...

Understanding Online Interaction

Understanding Online Interaction
With the first part of a course he is teaching in the fall, David Wiley wonders "why we don't peer review each others course materials all the time" and then observes "Oh, right, most people are trapped in proprietary, closed LMSs." There's a certain risk to posting your course on the open net like this - especially when you know I will be one of the first to read it and comment (and you can see my comments in the discussion thread). Technology and Trust (Advocate 25 03)

It works in much the same way as Siri on Apple’s HomePod, Google’s Home Hub, and Amazon’s Echo, so one can use it to ask for weather or sports updates, and to control smart devices in the home, such as Samsung’s smart fridge. However, Portal adds a camera and a screen, thus adding sight and touch to sound for more immersion to build trust in the technology. More...

This interesting item came through DLORN from MERLOT (I would observe that the definition of learning objects being collected by these systems is very loose indeed). More...

Announcing the Commonwealth

Announcing the Commonwealth
In various fora I have warned of the danger that Creative Commons will commercialize. It would be too great a temptation, I argued, to create special 'business' Creative Commons licenses for commercial content, possibly charging a fee for managing the license. When the Creation Commons 'Education' licenses were proposed a few months ago, I warned that this was first step in the process (here, here, here, and here). More...

Nice step-by-step tutorial on how to create aqua buttons using Firewworks (aqua buttons are those see-through buttons you see on Apple systems). The effect is pretty neat and the lessons show you some things about images in general. More...
