UK Independent Private Schools

UK Independent Private Schools
Sparticus links to this site with the following comment: "Recent research suggests that the average cost of a private education is £7,500 a year. This is three times what is spent on the child receiving a state education. If they gain power the Conservative Party have claimed that they will encourage parents to take £5,500 out of state coffers to pay for private education. The plan forbids its use on any school with fees higher than this. It is difficult to see how this will work. With private schools costing up to £9,000 a year and new ones needed capital to set up, few new schools would emerge to take up the offer." What I wonder is, with costs ranging at three times that of a public education, where do private schools get a reputation for efficiency. More...

Hand Scanners to Keep Tabs on Students at Boca Middle School

Hand Scanners to Keep Tabs on Students at Boca Middle School
The hand scanners will be used by teachers to take attendance. Though I don't really see how it really improves anything; my recollection of attendance is that it was over in a couple of minutes (in other words, more quickly than it will take a class of students to line up to have their hands scanned). Wikibooks - A Project Suggestion

Dave Cormier[Edit][Delete]: Wikibooks - A Project Suggestion, January 2, 2006
[link: Hits] You get the feeling now that things have been set in motion and that the final outcome is inevitable. Dave Cormier outlines his thinking behind "a well funded wikibook project as a viable alternative to the current publisher textbook hegemony." It's only a matter of time now, isn't it? Sure, there are things to think about, and Cormier begins to engage some of the issues. More...

What Are Those Sheep-bots Doing?

What Are Those Sheep-bots Doing?
Interesting and potentially useful in the long term. The article describes a research project to reverse-engineer Second Life in order to "make it open and readable like say, HTTP." It would be interesting to see whether the effort could derive some architectural features that would become like a vocabulary or protocol. More...

More OpenLearn RSS Feeds...
Soon it will be seen as odd that a course would be presented simply as a set of static web pages. Of course a course is delivered as a stream, over time. That's what a course is, as opposed to, say, a manual. More...

Learning with Handheld Technologies

Learning with Handheld Technologies
As Leonard Low summarizes, "Futurelab, a non-profit U.K. based organisation, who previously published one of the best literature reviews of mobile learning, have now published a handbook of recommendations for mobile learning approaches - including implementation ideas and case studies." It's a bit funny reading the summary by Tony Vincent... "the device" this and "the device" that. More...

Wikipedia Death Watch?

Wikipedia Death Watch?
The attack on Wikipedia (and make no mistake, it is an attack) is coming from two directions: first, from the inside, as "those who want it to be Very Serious Citable Work" leap from article to article tagging them as unreliable, or worse, Not Serious. More...
