Number of Erasmus students has reached 3 million

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-prn1/174887_161806250531786_2075947517_q.jpgBy Marielk. Newest statistics launched by the EU show that the number of students who have spent parts of their studies abroad with an Erasmus grant has now passed 3 million. Erasmus mobility programme was introduced in 1987 and is considered one of the definite success stories of European initiatives in the area of education. The programme includes at this point 33 countries (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey).
26 years ago when the programme was introduced it attracted 3,244 students Europe wise. The numbers for the 2011/2012 academic year indicate a new record – over 250 000 students spent either part of their studies abroad or had a job placement with a foreign company. Furthermore, well over 45 000 staff members, both academic and administrative received support to teach or train abroad. Over 33 ooo of these were teaching assignments, marking a 5.4% increase compared to the previous year. Read more...

The ERASMUS Programme – studying in Europe and more

http://ec.europa.eu/education/news/images/image3170.jpgCelebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012, ERASMUS is the most successful student exchange programme in the world. Each year, more than 230 000 students study abroad thanks to the Erasmus programme. It also offers the opportunity for student placements in enterprises, university staff teaching and training, and it funds co-operation projects between higher education institutions across Europe.
A European success story
Erasmus became part of the EU's Lifelong Learning Programme in 2007, covering new areas such as student placements in enterprises (transferred from the Leonardo da Vinci Programme), university staff training and teaching for business staff.
Erasmus is the perfect example of a European success story: close to 3 million students have participated since it started in 1987, as well as over 300 000 higher education teachers and other staff since 1997 (this type of exchange was also expanded further in 2007). The annual budget is in excess of 450 million euro; more than 4 000 higher education institutions in 33 countries participate, and more are willing to join. Read more...

Number of Erasmus students tops 3 million

http://ec.europa.eu/education/news/images/image3170.jpgFigures released today reveal that more than 3 million students have benefitted from EU Erasmus grants since the exchange scheme's launch in 1987.
The statistics, covering the 2011-2012 academic year, also show that the programme enabled more than 250 000 Erasmus students – a new record – to spend part of their higher education studies abroad or to take up a job placement with a foreign company to boost their employability. More than 46 500 academic and administrative staff also received support from Erasmus to teach or train abroad, an experience designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the 33 countries which participate in the scheme (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey).
Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said: "The latest record figures, showing that we have exceeded our target of 3 million Erasmus students, are testament to the enduring success and popularity of the programme. Erasmus is more important than ever in times of economic hardship and high youth unemployment: the skills and international experience gained by Erasmus students make them more employable and more likely to be mobile on the labour market. Erasmus has also played a tremendous role in improving the quality of higher education in Europe by opening up our universities and colleges to international cooperation. Looking to the future, I'm delighted that our new Erasmus+ programme will enable 4 million young people to study, train, teach or volunteer abroad in the next seven years."
Among the countries participating in Erasmus, the three most popular destinations for students in 2011-2012 were Spain, France and Germany. Spain also sent the largest number of students abroad, followed by Germany and France. Read more...

Erasmus+ increases the funds for adult learning

http://www.eaea.org/kuvat/EAEA-logo-2010.gifBy Aura Vuorenrinne. The member states of the European Union, European Commission and European Parliament have finally reached the agreement on the new programme for education, youth and sport. For adult educators Erasmus+ does not seem that bad after all.
Erasmus+, previously known as Erasmus for All or YES Europe combines the Lifelong Learning Programme, international cooperation programmes (e.g. Erasmus Mundus) and Youth in Action. Additionally, Erasmus+ includes sports.
Adult educators can now let out a sigh of relief.
- There have been significant improvements to the original plan of the Commission and I think adult education community can be very happy about that, says Gina Ebner, the Secretary-General of the EAEA. Read more...

European exchanges with Erasmus... Increasing university teachers’ mobility to promote students’ exchanges

http://www.cereq.fr/var/plain_site/storage/images/collections/training-and-employment/917-14-eng-GB/Training-and-Employment_large.pngEuropean exchanges with Erasmus... Increasing university teachers’ mobility to promote students’ exchanges. Par Igor Agbossou, Sophie Carel-Bergeon, Patrice Caro. Training and Employment, n° 79, 2008, 4 p.
The Erasmus student exchange programme created 20 years ago is completely in line with the knowledge economy model adopted in Lisbon in March 2000, according to which Europe is expected to become "the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge economy" between now and the year 2010. Despite the incitements proposed in the European Union's policies, the undeniable popularity of the programme and the increasing numbers of students participating in exchange schemes, the initial objectives are far from having been met. University lecturers also have been taking very little advantage of European mobility programmes. Now at both European and national levels, students' mobility has been found to be correlated with that of their tutors. In view of this link, the teachers would surely be incited to become more mobile in order to promote greater numbers of exchanges between students.
