Government begins policy of enlarging higher educational institutions

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS: The Government goes on way of the enlargement of higher educational institutions for providing high qualified and efficient education in the Republic of Armenia. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan informed about it at the course of question and answer with the Government in the National Assembly answering independent deputy Edmond Marukyan’s question. “The studies made by the international experts showed that small higher educational institutions do not have the needed resources for providing high qualified education, so we go on way of the enlargement of higher educational institutions,” the Prime Minister stated as reported by “Armenpress”. Rebellion in ruling party forces U-turn on plan that could have left thousands of students on Erasmus programme without funding. The Spanish government has abandoned plans for deep cuts to an European scheme that allows degree and post-graduate students to study abroad.
The education minister José Ignacio Wert was forced to back down after a rebellion in his own party, the governing Partido Popular, and has agreed that the 10,000 students already on the Erasmus scheme will receive the grants they were promised. More...

In praise of … Erasmus scholarships

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifSpain's poorest students who had already made their plans will now receive some funding after all. Erasmus would approve. "I wish to be called a citizen of the world," wrote the humanist Erasmus in 1522, a sentiment that inspired the Erasmus programme of EU scholarships, which funds university students to study for up to six months elsewhere in Europe as part of their course. Three million students have taken part in the scheme since it was launched (amid controversy, of course) in 1987. More...

European funding is crucial to future of UK universities

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy Joanna Newman. It's not enough to stay in Europe, says Joanna Newman ahead of a £70bn EU funding vote– we need to work with them too. The UK economy is doing a little better than expected this autumn with public sector borrowing down and tax receipts increasing. Nevertheless many households find their prospects bleak: welfare and local services are being cut, wage growth is weak and young people's job hopes are bearing the brunt. More...

More...

Erasmus +: New Opportunities For Cooperation In Higher Education In Eastern Partnership Region

http://www.eurasiareview.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/newerlogo.pngOn 22-25 October, the European Commission, together with Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, organised two events in Kaunas: the Eastern Partnership Youth Forum and an information event on Erasmus+ for Eastern Partnership (EaP) universities.
The Erasmus+ information day was an occasion to present new cooperation opportunities offered to universities from the EU and Eastern Partnership countries as of 2014. Teaching and management staff from the main universities in the region also received a briefing on the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions, which funds researchers’ mobility and training.
As of 2014, Erasmus+ will bring under a single umbrella all existing EU international higher education programmes (Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, Alfa, Edulink and bilateral programmes with industrialised countries). With this integration, the EU wishes to bring more coherence and synergy between the existing programmes and better align intra-EU and international cooperation and mobility. In a globalised university world, there is no longer any reason to apply different approaches and procedures to cooperation within and outside the EU. More...
