E-learning: Why employees expect a Netflix experience

E-learning: Why employees expect a Netflix experience
Steve Wainwright, Personnel Today, 2018/05/16
I can see why this will resonate with readers, and certainly we want something much better than pre-arranged courses and expensive fees. And if learning and watching videos were the same then the Netflix analogy would work. But learning - especially informal learning - isn't about selecting something to view from a recommender. Online learning isn’t as inclusive as you may think

Online learning isn’t as inclusive as you may think
Erin Clow, Klodiana Kolomitro, University Affairs, 2018/05/04
I will agree that inclusivity is more than just access, pace and choice of learning paths. But I push back against the idea that "a sense of isolation and a lack of community for both students and faculty" are unique to online learning. I've seen it in in-person classrooms. More...

Is there online learning in North Korea?

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . Yes, North Korea has (fairly recently) started delivering streamed lectures at a distance through some of its more prestigious universities, such as Kim Il-sung University. This prestigious university recently awarded degrees to those who finished their program via a distance learning course for the first time. You can even watch a promotional video from a North Korean web site. (It helps if you speak Korean, which I don’t, and it took over 10 minutes to download the 48 second video.) Students can watch the programs on laptops, tablets or mobile phones. More...

Athabasca University’s Centre for Distance Education to close

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . As my mother used to say when she had the goods on me, ‘A little birdie told me…’. Well, a (different) little birdie has told me that the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University is being closed on June 1 and the academic staff from the Centre are being moved into the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Is E-learning Really the Future or a Risk?

Is E-learning Really the Future or a Risk?
This essay has a catchy title, but the PDF document (the HTML link supplied by ACM wasn't working) that follows is not a good read. This raises a dilemma: should I include such resources in OLDaily, or simply let them slide into oblivion. Usually I opt for the latter, but this one is glaring, especially coming as it does from a publication of some repute. More...

University of Alberta: eLearning: From Grass Roots to Mission-Critical

University of Alberta: eLearning: From Grass Roots to Mission-Critical
This article purports to be a history of e-learning at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. I say 'purports' because it is hard for me to understand how you could understake such a project without mentioning the Faculty of Extension, Academic Technologies for Learning, or any of the leaders in the field who worked there, people such as Terry Anderson and Norm Friesen. Is There a Future for Online Ed?

Is There a Future for Online Ed?
With the recent collapse of Fathom and Harcourt Higher Education, people are beginning to ask this question, and the answer is assumed to be "no." But that's not the whole story, notes the author, as some universities are making e-learning work. More...
