Varsity councils need upgrading

Mail & GuardianBy Jairam Reddy. All post-1994 ministers have had to deploy administrators to shore up troubled universities. Until recently, university councils — the highest decision-making body of universities — did not have a collective voice. But the new University Council Chairs Forum South Africa (UCCF-SA) aims to rectify this. The vision of the organisation is to promote co-operative governance and transformation of universities, within a unified co-ordinated higher education system.
Since 1994 the higher education sector has undergone fundamental transformative changes at the level of governance, funding, planning, quality assurance, growth and expansion of the system. The number of university students has increased from 495 356 in 1994 to 937 455 in 2011, and black students have increased from 43% to 80%. More...

Varsities too full to function

Mail & GuardianBy Victoria John. University funding in SA has not kept up with enrolment, and lags behind other countries, a damning government report reveals. The first-year psychology class at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) was so big last year, some students had to sit on the floor.
"There were more than 600 students at my [first year] psychology lectures last year, and the venue wasn't big enough," said Vusi Zwane (21), a second-year BComm student majoring in industrial psychology. The biggest problem with not having enough lecturers is the loss of interaction during lectures," he said. More...

Study on Minority Men at Community Colleges

HomeMen of color attending community colleges are less likely to obtain an associate degree than are white males, despite being the most engaged in and out of the classroom, a new report finds. In "Aspirations to Achievement: Men of Color and Community Colleges," the Center for Community College Student Engagement reveals that even though black and Latino students at two-year institutions show more interest than their white peers in obtaining an associate degree or certificate, only 5 percent actually accomplish that goal within three years, compared to 32 percent for white students. My university just pays lip service to equality and diversity

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy Anonymous academic. Universities trot out BME staff for photos in their prospectuses, but when it comes to promotions, we are left at the end of the queue. I am a member of my university's BME staff group. Over the years, it has changed from a forum for us to discuss issues of racism, representation, and discrimination, to a co-opted showpiece for the university to show that it is doing its bit towards supporting equality. Time to change laws in which religious rights trump equality

By Alan Shanoff. York University’s administrative decision approving a male student’s request to be exempted from a group assignment that would have required him to intermingle with women, has been widely condemned.
Editorials in all four Toronto dailies agreed this request for religious accommodation should have been rejected.
Problem is, we seem to have forgotten one important thing: Our human rights laws. More...

How Much Diversity? Who Decides?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Scott Jaschik. The Obama administration has weighed in on a key legal question in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling in June that courts could not approve the consideration of race in admissions by colleges just because those institutions offered their "good faith."
The administration argued in a brief filed Friday that although the Supreme Court ruling requires courts to independently review whether colleges' policies are legitimate, those colleges are still entitled to "due regard" of their educational goals and how affirmative action fits into them.
