By Marvin Lazerson. My advice to the 47 higher-education ministers headed to Armenia in May to discuss the future of the Bologna Process is: Celebrate Bologna’s extraordinary achievements and then bid it goodbye.
The Bologna Process, formally begun in 1999, is the boldest higher-education reform ever undertaken in Europe and perhaps in the world. Its goal was that countries would voluntarily make their higher-education systems more compatible and coherent across international lines. More...
On 24-25 March 2015 the Bologna Follow-Up Group (BFUG) meeting took place in Riga bringing together representatives from almost all the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) member countries, consultative members, data collectors and the European Commission.
In Riga the BFUG among other issues had a chance to discuss the draft Yerevan Ministerial Communiqué, Fourth Bologna Policy Forum Statement, “Widening Participation for Equity and Growth”: A Strategy for the Development of the Social Dimension and Lifelong Learning in the EHEA to 2020 as well as the applications for the EHEA accession.
It is worth to highlight that the BFUG endorsed the 2015 Bologna Process Implementation Report that will be published and presented at the Yerevan Ministerial Conference. More...
The annual meeting of the NESSIE took place on 12 March 2015, in Helsinki, Finland. The main aim was to exchange the information on student support systems and provide recommendations for the improvement of funding systems.
There were series of important topics included in the discussion agenda of the meeting, namely double funding, portability of grants and loans, distance learning, EU court rulings. The main impact was how to make portable systems flexible within EHEA.

Le processus de Bologne a pour objectif de mettre en place un espace européen de l'enseignement supérieur.
Initié en 1998 par la France, l'Allemagne, l'Italie et le Royaume-Uni lors de la Déclaration de la Sorbonne, le processus s'est développé en 1999 à Bologne autour de 29 pays signataires. Ce sont maintenant 47 pays, 5600 institutions, 31 millions d'étudiants, qui participent à cette aventure européenne.
Destiné à favoriser la mobilité, la lisibilité et l'attractivité de l'espace européen de l'enseignement supérieur (EEES), le processus de Bologne se construit autour de 3 grands principes :
Par ailleurs, les conférences ministérielles successives de Prague (2001), Berlin (2003), Bergen (2005), Londres (2007), Louvain (2009), Budapest-Vienne (2010), Bucarest (2012) ont précisé les orientations et consolidé les réformes autour de plusieurs thématiques :
La prochaine conférence ministérielle aura lieu à Erevan en Arménie en 2015.

Today, Thursday 26 February, the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) of the European Parliament debates a draft report on Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Bologna Process, prepared by Krystyna Lybacka, Member of the European Parliament. The report aims at shining light on the most important aspects of the Bologna Process and what members of the parliament believe are the most pressing steps forward towards the Ministerial Conference in Yerevan in 2015 and beyond.
“It is great to see the interest from the Members of the European Parliament on the future of higher education in Europe and how this affects the lives of million of students,“ Elisabeth Gehrke says, ESU chairperson.
With its focus on student-centred learning, the social dimension, recognition and access to mobility the report supports much of what has been ESU’s priorities for the Bologna Process. It also supports strengthening the ties between education and research, specifically mentioning synchronising the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme and the Erasmus+ Programme.
“We would like to see a joint support from all political groups in the European Parliament, as it is essential for the democratically elected representatives of the European citizens to maintain clear priorities for the future of European cooperation in higher education,” Gehrke adds.
