ASEAN member states commit to Australia's New Colombo Plan

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says she is pleased with the development, saying that close ties between the ASEAN members make it logical that Australian students study at universities in Southeast Asia rather than in countrites like the United States.
"Given the long history of cooperation and close ties between ASEAN members, it is appropriate that young Australians will now have greater opportunities to learn from our Southeast Asian neighbours," she said in a statement.
A pilot of the New Colombo plan began earlier this year in January, with more than 1300 Australian undergraduate students supported by the government to study in the region. More...

Deregulation has its risks despite greater mobility

By Andrew Harvey. EDUCATIONAL mobility in Australia is low. Over half of postgraduates are studying at their original undergraduate institution. Tertiary admissions centres still end at state boundaries. Most institutions assume their commencing students will be their completing graduates and most students study at the university nearest their home postcode. Even PhD students have been described as a stay-at-home cohort. More...

Plans underway to change university entrance system

Eleven MyanmarThe current university entrance system is not liked by some young people who want to become students, but want to be able to select major subjects they prefer, observers say.
The system allows universities to choose an eligible candidate by assessing his or her prior subject and pass marks from the matriculation examination.
Plans are underway to change the system, because it upsets candidates who want to pick major subjects that they like. The entrance method will be changed in accord with a law the Union parliament will enact, but this is unlikely to be done in the 2014-15 academic year. More...

Budget cuts of over $1.5b per year give universities no choice

By Courtney Sloane (NTEU National Office). The impact of the Federal Budget’s 20% per student funding cut leaves universities with a massive funding black hole amounting to more than $1.5 billion a year from 2019 onwards, argues the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) in their latest budget analysis briefing paper.
Universities will have to increase their fees by about 30% on average just to compensate for CSP funding cuts. To reduce costs, the NTEU is fearful that universities will further increase their reliance upon casual staff to teach undergraduate students and reduce spending on research and community service obligations.
