New Promotional Partnership Between StudyPortals and Open Education Europa

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZZe22GTTQ20BJpVUZirGINg2eVVmwhjCWqUWqHsw5MRSfwe_zrhbol9kOpen Education Europa is pleased to announce a new partnership with Study Portals, an online platform that helps students to understand the options and opportunities available for international study.

Open Education Europa and Study Portals share a commitment to providing easily accessible and comprehensive information to students in Europe, empowering them to improve and expand their own educational experience.
Students are more mobile than ever before, and international experience is a valuable asset. The problem is that it can be difficult to find and understand the many opportunities available from the array of institutions across Europe. Study Portals offer specialized platforms to search and compare courses at various levels (BachelorMaster, and PhD). Furthermore, students can find valuable information about scholarships and read about other students’ experiences and opinions of the institutions they have attended.
One of the Study Portal components is the Distance Learning Portal, which is dedicated to the promotion of open and distance education programs.

University museums for the 21st century

The University Museums Group and University Museums in Scotland launched the joint publication, which celebrates the outstanding contribution made by such museums across the UK, at the Museums Association Conference in Liverpool on 12 November. The report praises the growing success of university museums within the UK’s higher education sector, and their unique contribution to the public profile of universities.

Case studies illustrate recent changes in how university museums participate in the academic missions of higher education institutions, as well as their remarkable record for wider public engagement and community impact.

The report shows how university museums deliver unique benefits to the higher education sector and to the culture at large, including:

  • nearly 4 million public visits to university museums last year
  • 3,500 public events and 200 exhibitions held last year by university museums
  • students learning from museum objects on more than 700 university courses
  • university museums increasingly delivering and supporting collections-based research across multiple disciplines.

University museums also demonstrate exceptional performance in attracting funding, with HEFCE’s core museums and galleries funding generating an increase in funding from outside the sector of 179 per cent to over £20 million over the last five years.

The report is available on the University Museums Group web-site.

International workshop on doctoral education and e-supervision

The discussions that took place during the IAU-ACUP IDEA Workshop on Doctoral education and e-Supervision at the Universitat Oberta de Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, on 31 October can be followed online here
Since 2011, the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) and the IAU brought together two projects: Innovative Approaches to Doctoral Education in Africa and the African-Spanish Higher Education Management Platform. One of the main outcomes of this collaboration is the development of the joint IDEA platform on innovative approaches to doctoral education. The joint initiative identified the issue of doctoral supervision as one of the key challenges African higher education institutions are facing.
Through the recent Personal Learning Environment (PLE)-PhD project financed through the IAU LEADHER programme, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Kenyatta University (KU), ACUP and IAU looked at how digital technologies, more specifically the web 2.0 tools, can provide answers to the challenge during a one day Workshop on doctoral education and e-supervision
The workshop discussions and conclusions are available online at: http://plephd.blogs.uoc.edu/.
