UK: Fall in International STEM Students Threatens Quality

http://www.ireg-observatory.org/images/audit/audit_baner_pionowy_1.gifThe Science and Technology Select Committee of the upper house of the British parliament, the House of Lords, has investigated the number of international students in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in British universities and the impact of immigration policy. Over the last two years the number of international students fell by 10%.
Tightening immigration rules, high visa fees and restrictions on working after graduation were deterring students who were now more attracted to the USA, Australia and Canada.

The world is rapidly becoming a different place, with globalisation and modernisation imposing huge challenges to individuals and societies. Schools need to prepare students to live and work in a world in which most people will need to collaborate with people of diverse cultural origins, and appreciate different ideas, perspectives and values; a world in which people need to decide how to trust and collaborate across such differences, often bridging space and time through technology; and a world in which their lives will be affected by issues that transcend national boundaries. Twenty-first century schools help students to develop autonomy and identity that is cognisant of the reality of national and global pluralism, equipping them to join others in life, work and citizenship. Europe’s social polarisation and the generational struggle

This post, written by Bruegel's Olga Tschekassin, discusses the latest results on Europe's poverty rates, unemployment rates and income inequalities. The post is a part of the Wikiprogress Series on Jobs and Earnings.
According to the latest Eurobarometer survey on the social impact of the crisis, 80% of respondents believe that poverty has increased in their country over the past 12 months. Over 30% of respondents in Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary reported that their household ran out of money to pay for ordinary bills, food and other daily consumer items at some point during the previous 12 months. These alarming numbers are reflecting the perception of European citizens. But what do indicators measuring different dimensions of poverty and inequality actually show? More...

Improving Access to Visas and Residence Permits

ESN logoESN has experienced first hand the difficult access to Visas and Residence Permits. Our Web Project Administrator Salih Odabasi from Turkey was not able to join us here in the headquarters in Brussels for his elected term 2013/14. Not only did his application get rejected but it also took more than 3 months after handing in the final documents to get an answer.
The European Commission has proposed in 2013 a revision of VISA Directive 2004/114 to improve the access for students, youth workers and volunteers. More...

The promise of Validation of Prior Learning (VPL) as the motor of social and economic change

The 1st Validation of Prior Learning VPL Biennale was held at Inholland University, Rotterdam, from 9 to 11 April 2014. More than 200 participants from European countries, the Republic of Korea and Canada attended the conference.
