U.A.E. Incident Raises Questions for Colleges That Open Campuses in Restrictive Countries

A New York University professor stopped on his way to conduct research in the United Arab Emirates said he wasn’t completely surprised when he learned, while trying to board a plane at Kennedy International Airport this week, that he’d been barred from entering the country.
He had, after all, publicly criticized the exploitation of migrant construction workers who helped build NYU’s new campus in Abu Dhabi, the emirates’ capital. He knew that wouldn’t sit well with local authorities who he said have kicked researchers out of the country for less. More...

Not everything that can be counted counts …

Today the League of European Research Universities (LERU) becomes a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. The Declaration, issued in 2012 by a group of scientific journal editors and publishers, makes a number of recommendations for improving the way in which the quality of research output is evaluated.
As an association of 21 research-intensive universities promoting good research policies in Europe, LERU particularly welcomes the statement in the Declaration that the use of Journal Impact Factors (JIF*) as a simple measure of quality for individual articles is not adequate. Read more...
