Research funding in a time of austerity

The Guardian homeBSteven Hill. The UK research system has survived through a difficult period of flat-cash funding, but what are the prospects in the run-up to the next spending review and general election? In the five years I have worked at Research Councils UK the world has changed. As I joined in 2007, the Northern Rock collapse was unfolding, heralding the broader financial crisis that was to have impacts on all areas of society. From my perspective, the last five years in UK research policy have been a period of considerable change, driven by the broader financial environment. Much of this change has been subtle, below the radar, but small effects can accumulate and lead to big consequences. With an interim spending review currently under way, and the next full spending review expected following the general election in 2015, the UK's national academies this week called for continued and enhanced support for research. If heeded, this intervention could mark an important turning point in funding policy. Read more...

Rich give back more to U.K. universities

By Alanna Petroff. Wealthy donors are coughing up record amounts for U.K. universities as tough economic times force the institutions to become more aggressive in raising funds.
Higher education institutions across the U.K. raked in a record £774 million ($1.2 billion) in fundraising during the 2011-2012 academic year, according to a new survey. Fundraising was up by 14% compared to the previous year, and by 33% compared to 2009-2010. Results from the Ross-CASE survey show that universities in the U.K. spent more on their fundraising campaigns and hired more fundraising staff, resulting in higher overall donation levels and a larger number of donors. There were 213,000 donors in 2011-2012, compared to 201,000 donors in the previous year. Read more...

Why Universities Need to Get Smart on Crowdfunding

The Crowd CafeBy Jonathan Sandlund. I speak often about the opportunity to couple investment crowdfunding with existing financial, intellectual and physical infrastructure. Universities have invested decades, and millions, in building all three. With access to biased and engaged capital (alumni); vast intellectual capital reserves (faculty and students); and expansive physical infrastructure (equipment, spaces), Universities are uniquely positioned to meaningfully capitalize on this opportunity. And doing so—integrating and championing a University crowdfunding solution— will create enormous value for its direct and indirect stakeholders, including students, alumni, and community members.
This is a dense subject so I’m going to break it into three parts: Part II of this University Crowdfunding series will speak to Alumni engagement; Part III will focus on the University’s community at large; but first, let’s start with the students. Read more...

Donations to universities hit record high

The IndependentBy Richard Garner. Charitable gifts soar to £774m as universities adopt US-style approach to fund-raising. Philanthropists provided record levels of funding to British universities last year, as institutions increasingly tap wealthy alumni and corporate sponsors for donations.
A study of charitable giving to universities reveals they have received £774m in donations in the past year – a rise of 14.4 per cent on the previous year's figure, itself a record, and 33 per cent up on two years ago.
Researchers say universities are adopting a US-style approach to fund-raising. In the States, Ivy League universities such as Harvard rely heavily on donations from former alumni and sponsors.
The lion's share of this year's increased funding – 45 per cent – is going to Oxford and Cambridge universities, both of whom have reached £1bn targets for fund-raising in the past two years. Read more...

Income gulf widens as philanthropy decline affects fundraising revenue

Times Higher EducationBy David Matthews. Demise of matched funding leaves majority of institutions worse off. Inequality among universities in terms of their fundraising incomes has grown hugely after the end of a matched funding scheme to boost philanthropy across the sector, a new report shows. Even though more than two-thirds of 132 institutions saw their philanthropic income shrink during 2011-12, 10 Russell Group universities raised more than half a billion pounds between them, meaning the sector’s total haul went up.

http://www.lefigaro.fr/icones/une.gifPar Assma Maad.

International fundraising starts at home

By Pusa Nastase, Senior Program Manager, Center for Higher Education Policy, School of Public Policy, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. Are you a university administrator who has repeatedly been told that the days of funding certainty are now over and that you need to look elsewhere for funds? Have you already had discussions about looking abroad because the state sector has no money and local sources of funding (national research agencies, foundations, corporations, etc) cannot be relied upon? Have you wondered how you should begin fundraising from international sources while having no prior exposure in this world?
If your answer was positive to at least one of the questions above, read on: this blog post is designed to provide you with some useful ideas to improve your fundraising ability. Read more...
