Doug Peterson, doug - off the record, 2014/08/26

What Doug Peterson describes here is very similar to my own workflow, readingflow, whateverflow. It's a restatement of the "aggregate-remix-repurpose-feed forward" methodology, identifying specific tools that can be used to accomplish it. More...

Scenes From COCAL: A Conference for Contingent Faculty Looks to Seize Its Moment

By Sydni Dunn - Chronicle Vitae. New York—Inside a classroom at the City University of New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, nearly 30 contingent academic workers debated which verb was more powerful: “shape” or “animate.”
It may sound like a trivial matter, but the group had a job to do. By the end of the two-hour session, participants had to craft a 100-word proposal on how higher-education laborers could build a national strategy for change. Every word counted. See more...

Rapid growth in university engagement worldwide

By Karen MacGregor. Growing numbers of university leaders worldwide are seeing community engagement as a central priority, says Professor Robert M Hollister, executive director of the Talloires Network – a global coalition of universities committed to moving beyond the ivory tower. Rather than distracting from engagement, internationalisation is “dramatically reinforcing and accelerating that trend, through people learning from and influencing one another’s work”.
The network’s 2014 conference will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in December – for the first time in the developing world. Read more...

Nuffic at ACA Conference: “Don’t give up on Africa”

At the 2014 Annual ACA Conference Nuffic’s Beer Schröder participated in a session on Africa. He concluded with an appeal to European institutions to continue their support: "It would be scandalous if they would leave African institutions in the lurch, only to be able to invest in a higher international ranking for themselves."
The 2014 Conference of the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) in Bordeaux (15-17 June) focused on the theme: ‘Europe in the World. Higher education trends across the globe’. There were sessions on recent trends in major non-European countries/regions, and also on partnerships between Europe and universities in these regions. More...
