It is bracing to have my institution—Wheaton College—held up in the pages of The Chronicle as the embodiment of “The Great Accreditation Farce,” the headline on Peter Conn’s essay. Conn suggests that Wheaton and other religious colleges are “intellectually compromised institutions” that betray the intellectual standards that should mark accredited institutions of higher education. The California State Auditor on Thursday issued a scathing report on the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), the regional accreditor that has come under fire for its handling of the City College of San Francisco crisis. The auditor's office said the commission acted in an inconsistent manner with its decision to terminate City College's accreditation. Read more...An independent panel on Friday instructed City College of San Francisco's accreditor, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, to reconsider its decision last year to terminate the college's accreditation. The commission appointed a five-member panel to rule on the college's appeal of the termination decision. While City College may have deserved that decision when it was made, the panel ruled, the college's efforts to fix its problems during the last six months deserve a look by the commission. The college commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has voted to strip Brewton-Parker College of its accreditation, putting the institution's eligibility for federal financial aid -- and perhaps its future -- at risk. The Georgia Baptist college had been on probation for the past year because of its failure to meet several of the Southern Association's requirements regarding financial stability and controls. A pervasive “because we have to” approach to higher education accreditation is contributing to the growing crisis of confidence in the value of college and the degrees it bestows. When faculty and higher education leaders declare “we complied,” it’s probably not good enough. This is evident in a new Gallup/Lumina Foundation poll, which reveals a troubling gap between what employers want from college graduates and how colleges are preparing students. While nearly all – 96 percent – of chief academic officers surveyed said they are confident they've prepared graduates to be successful in the workplace, just 11 percent of business leaders surveyed agreed with that statement.
