Senate Inquiry Into Accreditation

As the Obama administration announces a set of executive actions and proposed legislative steps to toughen its oversight of the agencies, a U.S. Senate investigative committee has opened a sweeping inquiry into higher education accreditation, and lawmakers have started requesting records of individual accrediting agencies, according to several people familiar with the review. Thousands of students fall victim to accreditation spat

By Maina Waruru. Last August the engineers board published a list of 25 accredited courses in five universities, effectively disapproving 47 other courses offered in eight universities. In rejecting the courses the board cited, among other reasons, lack of qualified lecturers, a “weak curriculum”, course segmentation and duplication, and lack of “professional focus”. Read more...

Judge Throws Out Suit Against Accreditor That Shut Down For-Profit Venture

A federal judge in California has dismissed a lawsuit that the company behind the for-profit Ivy Bridge College filed against the accreditor that shut down the institution. According to the ruling, by Judge Samuel Conti of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Ivy Bridge filed the suit in the wrong jurisdiction, as the company is based in California but the accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, is not. Obama’s college accreditation reform: A welcome first step

The Obama Administration recently announced  a new experimental initiative that, for the first time, will allow non-accredited institutions to gain access to the federal student aid program.  This initiative, which will be limited to 10 experimental sites, will make it possible for students to use Pell grants and federal student loans to finance investments in education at accredited colleges and universities that make extensive use of new and innovative models that haven’t yet received a stamp of approval from the system of accreditation – such as MOOCs, which are becoming increasingly popular alternatives. Transnational Education Ghana receives British Accreditation

The Transnational Education (TNE) Africa Company Limited through TNE Ghana Limited has received an International Higher Education accreditation from the British Accreditation Council (BAC).
A statement issued in Accra by Ms Mary Anne Amoah, Marketing Manager, Lancaster University Ghana, said the accreditation was valid for a four year term.
It said TNE has become the first and only education provider on African mainland to have attained the BAC accreditation. More...
