U of C opens door to more aboriginal doctors

The University of Calgary has seen a sharp increase in the number of aboriginal applicants offered coveted medical school spots since the school began a new initiative aimed at levelling the playing field. And those aboriginal students are performing just as well and earning the same grades as their non-aboriginal counterparts, according to new research.
“We’re trying to make a previously uneven playing field even, but what we’re also trying to do very carefully is not slant it in the other direction,” said Dr. Ian Walker, the director of admissions for undergraduate medical education at the University of Calgary.
