Job Placement Confusion

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Megan Rogers. Keene State College released its first placement survey of a graduating class this fall, with plans to annually track graduates’ post-collegiate career outcomes. Of the 235 graduates from the class of 2012 who generated usable responses from the survey, 94 percent reported being employed or engaged in further education. At Syracuse University, where outcome surveys have been administered for at least 30 years, 84 percent of the class of 2012 was working or attending graduate school. Read more...

Measuring Other Outcomes

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Allie Grasgreen. As the old saying goes, money can’t buy happiness. And yet, in measuring alumni success and satisfaction, colleges – often prodded by those seeking to hold them accountable – typically look at two things: whether their former students are gainfully employed, and whether they’re making a decent salary. A new project announced today, led by Gallup and debuting at Purdue University, aims to change that. Focusing on a set of factors that are shown to correlate with “a great life,” the survey of 30,000 graduates annually will provide data on how alumni of groups of colleges (public or private institutions in certain states, for instance, or athletic conferences) are faring and how they compare to national averages. Sunshine for Campus Debit Cards?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Michael Stratford. U.S. consumer protection officials on Tuesday called for financial institutions to publicly disclose their agreements with colleges to market debit cards and other products to students. The arrangements -- which have increasingly come under scrutiny from consumer advocates, federal agencies and lawmakers -- often involve financial companies paying colleges to offer institution-branded student ID cards that double as a debit card or separate debit cards that students use to gain access to their federal financial aid money. Times Higher Education's Books of 2013

Times Higher EducationThe year’s best reads for work and pleasure, chosen by scholars and senior figures in the sector.
Alasdair Allan Minister for learning, science and Scotland’s languages, Scotland
For pleasure: King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism (Pan) by Adam Hochschild. Pleasure is perhaps not the right word, but this is an eye-opening and sobering account of a forgotten piece of history – what happened in the Belgian Congo a hundred years ago to hundreds of thousands of Africans forced to labour in European rubber plantations. For work: Complete Norwegian: Teach Yourself (Hodder Education) by Margaretha Danbolt Simons. I have been meaning to do this for a long time, as I am a bit of a fan of Norway. I have not, in honesty, mastered much of the language, but I can now sing the Norwegian national anthem. Read more...

Feature: China on the fast track

Times Higher EducationBy John Morgan. Beijing wants to supercharge its nation’s universities as it has its railroads, but might its ambitions falter for want of academic freedom and cultural change?
Driving up to Shanghai’s Hongqiao railway station, reputedly the biggest in Asia, its sheer size takes your breath away. Inside, the terminus gleams like a super-modern airport, while the scale of the vast space makes it feel like a gigantic cathedral. Read more...

Further education praised for ‘unique’ HE contribution

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/magazine/graphics/logo.pngBy David Matthews. Further education colleges are giving students a “unique” environment in which to undertake higher education, according to a new report.
Capturing an HE ethos in college higher education practice, released by the Quality Assurance Agency on 19 December, looked at six different colleges that were teaching in higher education.
They were “increasingly” taking on teachers who only taught higher education, the report found, but normally teachers taught further education as well. More...

The Internationalization of Higher Education: Next Steps for Europe

By Erin Nordal. The internationalization of higher education has become a reality for many, with a systematic increase in both shorter-term student mobility and full-degree mobility in many parts of the world. This plays a key role in enhancing intercultural competencies and understanding, and ultimately enhances the quality of higher education through the introduction of global perspectives in curricula.
As an umbrella organization for 47 national unions of students in 39 countries, the European Students’ Union (ESU) represents over 11 million students in Europe. Internationalization is a main area in our work in representing and promoting students’ social, economic and cultural interests. More...

Positioning Lifelong Learning in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

In collaboration with the German Association for Adult Education – dvv International – UIL hosted its second Think Tank meeting on Lifelong Learning: Positioning Lifelong Learning in the Post-2015 Development Agenda at its premises in Hamburg from 12–13 December 2013. The overall aim of the meeting was to clarify the concept of lifelong learning and seek key stakeholders’ advice on positioning lifelong learning more saliently in the post-2015 universal, sustainable development agenda. Seventeen high level experts in the field of lifelong learning from all regions of the world, representing UNESCO Member States, UNICEF, WHO, World Bank Youth and non-governmental organisations, participated in the meeting.

The education goal in the post-2015 agenda is so far titled Quality Education and Lifelong Learning. This target will be taken strongly forward in the coming months by UIL and partner organisations.  As lifelong learning is linked to and contributes to other targets of the development agenda, the participants pointed out that lifelong learning  is not limited to education, but  is linked to issues including health, employment, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. In national lifelong learning policies, attention should not only be paid to formal learning, but also non-formal and informal learning. The meeting also discussed a technical note on lifelong learning prepared by UIL. It will be revised based on the input received from participants and will be part of UNESCO’s series of technical notes. The meeting emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between international organizations, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and the private sector, in moving the lifelong learning agenda forward.
