Universities push for ‘flexibility’ in fees

afr.comBy Tim Dodd. Two influential vice-chancellors have renewed their push for “flexibility” in university fees to allow them to rise to boost funding for cash-strapped higher education institutions.

Writing in Monday’s The Australian Financial Review, Glyn Davis, the vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne, and Greg Craven, the vice-chancellor of the Australian Catholic University (ACU), said the federal government’s review of the demand driven system for university funding should consider this option.

China encourages MOOCs in HE transformation drive

The government is actively encouraging the import of quality courses to China – as long as they do not contain politically sensitive content – as well as the export of its best courses, Professor Huang Ronghuai, associate dean of the faculty of education at Beijing Normal University, told University World News. Open Universities Australia MOOCs attract 100,000 students

Open Universities Australia* reached a remarkable milestone last Monday when it announced that its free online learning platform Open2Study had lured 100,000 enrolments, with 53,000 students from more than 180 countries undertaking one or more of its massive open online courses, or MOOCs.

Appeal Court upholds university verdict on plagiarism

The Bangkok South Criminal Court on Wednesday upheld the verdict of a lower court that had acquitted the president of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand of conducting an unfair investigation in the first ever case of the university revoking a PhD. 
The university stripped Supachai Lorlowhakarn of his doctorate after finding that large parts of his thesis had been plagiarised. Supachai is the director of Thailand's National Innovation Agency, or NIA, and the case is likely to have major repercussions for the NIA. More...

RI sees 30 percent increase of students study in Europe

Expansion of massive open online courses in Asia

Coursera pushes online education in China

Online education services provider Coursera has partnered China's open.163.com to offer massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the Chinese market. Itself a MOOC site established by two computer science professors from Standford University, Coursera hopes the partnership will provide Chinese consumers better access to its content on one of China's most popular MOOC sites, open.163.com, which also hosts videos from TED and Khan Academy, reported Ctocio. East Asian universities gain ground on US and UK – THE ranking

While the pace is slower than suggested when last year’s rankings were released, it is apparent that while universities in America and in London are holding their own, institutions in the UK’s regions and in continental Europe are losing out to competitors from Asia – and specifically from China, South Korea, Singapore and Japan. More...
