The Web's Impact On Student Learning

The Web's Impact On Student Learning
The author might be the first to agree that this survey of research in web-based learning is a bit misleading, since, as she notes, there has been little effort made to distinguish between the impact of the new technology and the impact of the learning design delivered, or employed, using that technology. No matter. More...

One wonders how Harasim (1990) could have made a comment about web-based learning several years before the web was invented. More...

Building a Metadata-Based Website

Building a Metadata-Based Website
This article will be too technical for many readers, but is worth a quick scan in any case if only to develop an understanding of the way data will be managed and presented in websites (and other applications) of the future. More...

Blackboard, Students and Publishing on the Web

Blackboard, Students and Publishing on the Web
The best bit in this article is near the bottom where the author quotes from the PR flim-flammery intended to be a student manual in the Blackboard system. As with so many corporate websites, this general rule applies: keep the public relations people (and their useless adjectives) as far away from the actual product as possible. More...

Degrees from the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University can allegedly be obtained for as little as £200 (US$266), complete with university emblems and gold seals – and it has emerged that copies of Robert Gordon University degrees even contained faked signatures from Chancellor Sir Ian Wood and former principal Professor William Stevely, writes Kirsten Robertson for The Press and Journal. More Elsevier Cancellations

More Elsevier Cancellations
Cornell's website is not responding as I write, but this summary captures the gist: "The Cornell University Library is cancelling "several hundred" Elsevier journals and has explained the reasons why in a public letter. Excerpt: 'We can no longer subscribe to so many Elsevier journals (including duplicates) that we no longer need.'" What's interesting is this: "We have tried in these discussions to broker an arrangement that would allow us to cancel some Elsevier titles without such a large price increase to the titles remaining --but Elsevier has been unwilling to accept any of our proposals." Personally, I don't see why they bother subscribing to any Elsevier titles - they could take the money saved and set up an institutional archive to publish their own professor's works. More...

Web Search: How the Web has Changed Information Retrieval

Web Search: How the Web has Changed Information Retrieval
The author sent me a nice note and this, a link to his most recent paper on the semantic web, which I pass along. The underlying premise is that a web page isn't an appropriate medium for metadata - a web page should be thought of, at best, as a 'snapshot' of an information resource. More...
